Time it takes to get off ship?

Hello fellow cruisers;

I've only cruised twice and both times they were smaller ships. I will be sailing on the NCL Epic (which is quite larger than I have experienced) in October and I have a few questions.

1) If we arrive in Port at 7am, what time can I expect to be off the ship? I've booked an excursion (not through the cruiseline) and they said pick up at port is 8:30am. Is this enough time for us to get off the ship and meet our guide?

2) Our cruise ends in Civitavecchia and docks at 6am then we will be boarding the train to Venice. I am trying to figure out what time to book our train for? What time can I expect to be off the ship?

Any advise would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you

You didn't mention the port that you have the tour booked for but assuming you arrive by 7:00 AM I don't see any issue being off and ready for your 8:30 AM tour.

If you self disembark at Civitacecchia you should be able to be off the ship by 7:30 AM. If you can't do that I would plan for 8:00 AM to claim your luggage.

As long as the port is not a tender port and you have no other issues, you will not have any problem making your excursion

In Ports of Call, when they open the door, simply walk off. Not all passengers will be getting off immediately!

At your final stop, those who want to carry their own luggage off go first. You must be able to handle ALL of your stuff yourself....there is no one to help you. Then, they take those with early flights next, and so on....

From the other thread,

You will have plenty of time at Naples, as long as the ship docks at the stated time. It actually only takes about 5 minutes to get off the ship to where the tour operators wait for the passengers just outside the terminal.

I had a transfer organised for Civitavecchia due to the number of ships in port and handling our luggage. There are tour companies that are cost effective ($70 AUD to the Rome airport) and much easier than the train which is a bit of a distance from the port if walking and dragging luggage.

We recently disembarked in Rome on the 9th. We had 11:25 train tickets to Bologna from Rome Termini. It actually was a bit tight, due to two issues. I had arranged for a shared shuttle to Termini at 9:00 - which normally would be plenty of time. However, there was a very bad electrical storm when we ported, which lasted well into the morning. Luggage could not be offloaded and the ship did not clear until shortly after 8:00 am. Then there was a log jam exiting the terminal. It was raining so hard people just stopped in their tracks, blocking exits.

We managed to get to our shuttle by 9:00 am, but others scheduled with us did not. And, then for some unknown reason the shuttle company added two people who were going to FCO on our van (everyone else was going to Rome)and went to the airport first.

So, I guess my point is, if your train is leaving from Civitavecchia, I would allow enough time for even a weird occurrence as a late vessel clearing. If you are picking up the train in Rome as we did (to avoid a ton of luggage schlepping), book something after 11:00. If Termini would have had the same security baggage screening that is in place in the larger Spanish rail stations, we might have missed the train.
