I'd probably yelled at the kid first asking how he got so stupid, take his picture, ask his cabin number and report him. There are phones around to call GS or security.

What would you do if you saw a young teen throw one of the large chess pieces overboard?

 

Yes, this did happen and I did witness it. LOL I did do something but now question if that's how I should have handled it.

 

Anyone who wouldn't report that is an accessory. I'm curious what the outcome was.

I think the teacher in me would have come out. I would have scolded the kid for doing what he did, told him/her how dangerous their actions were and then asked them where their parents were. I would also report it to security/guest services.

 

 

Omg. That's exactly what happened. The teacher side came out. I scolded him, demanded he hand me his seapass card (which he did) and told he was coming with me and he followed me to the pool bar on lido and told the bar tender to call security. Kid starts crying and other bar patrons start reassuring him he is a good person and it's going to be ok. Security comes, very sweet lady reassuring him and takes some info and then escorts him to his room. I have no idea what happened after that. It was the last night of an 8 night cruise. He was in with his uncle and cousins. Begging for uncle not to be fined and saying parents are poor. Made me feel guilty for being a hardazzz about it. Even the security woman was super sweet.

Even good kids make bad decisions and mistakes. Hopefully he learned a lesson.

Exactly! Maybe cost him a few $$ from his allowance to repay for piece. Funny, I told this story to my wife and she said if he had gotten away with this it could have led to one upmanship between buddies. The next thing could be loungers. Then another posted just that, loungers going overboard.

Hope he learned a good lesson!

Kids , weather they are good or bad, need to know there are consequences for our actions. OP would you not want to know what your kids are doing? I would want to know. IMHO, I don't need to ask anyone if I needed to turn this kid in. I hope most people would know the right thing to do.

 

And if my kid did something like that I would want to know. I have had people approach me and tell me what my kid had done, and I had the knowledge to act on it and hold my own kid responsible for their actions.

It's a shame people get so destructive sometimes.I would have scolded him, not harshly as no kid listens to other adults yelling at him, but something more along the lines of someone could have thought that was someone going overboard. Then I would go report it to someone from Carnival.

Many years ago my DW witnessed a couple of young guys throwing an ice sculpture overboard. Remember those at the midnight buffet?

 

Those guys got tossed off the ship and are probably retired Judges today.:eek:

 

This stuff has been going on for a long, long time. I understand Noah's son tossed a hog off the ark! Mind you it was a chair hog............:D

His immediate remorse, tears and respectfulness to authority made me feel bad for him. He is 14. I have twin 15 yr olds they have never done anything like this but they are dumb kids...(all kids are). I wondered if I shouldn't of just taken him to his uncle and let him deal with it. But given what y'all have said about the possibility of someone thinking a person went over board I am glad I turned him in. He was with his cousin and when confronted cousin bailed fast. He said that his cousin had been daring him to do it. He felt pressured and he was a tag a long w the cousins family.

 

I wish I knew what the outcome was with Carnival. He did seem like a sweet kid once I confronted him.

if i had a camera, i would take pics or video and then call security. if i didn't have a camera i would call security and then tail the teen and inform security.

First off, let me say, you're not a witch, I think you handled it the right way.

 

Would it really matter to you how other people reacted? Why second guess how you handled it on a message board depending on how others responded?

I would have taken his picture if I had my camera with me and most definitely reported it to security. I would not have confronted him or his parents. Let Carnival security deal with the communication.

 

What a punk. As others mentioned, it could have escalated to something bigger and more stupid if you didn't intervene.

I think you totally did the right thing. The teacher in me always comes out in this situation. And I think that is the important part of this. Right now, he is still a minor. He needs to learn that there are consequences. If he learns before 18, you have done him a great service (and by his reaction, I believe he did). When I taught at the high school my stepson attended, I watched as we had one soft principal who did very little when a few boys were caught breaking into cars. A couple of these boys have continued to have problems with the law according to my son. I partially blame the principal. Sure it is possible they may still have been bad, but a good scare might have had some impact.

That is exactly what I was going to say. I am a teacher and would have gone up to the kid with my teacher voice to voice my displeasure about the disrespect, littering of the ocean, and waste of money. I would have asked to see his sign and sail card and ask for him name. If he did not reply, I would have taken a picture of him and have gone straight to security. That is so not cool!
