Google to see video .Crazy if u ask me I feel as though this is a pilot just showing off and having "fun". but I'm sorry, this is unwarranted, and as harmless as it looks is very dangerous. if the faa gets the registration on the plane and finds out the pilot operating the controls, he or she will have their license suspended indefinitely. Boozebabe Posted June 30, 2016 #3 Share Posted June 30, 2016 I would think that enough people on that ship took some pictures. And a really good camera could pick up those numbers. I bet it scared the Bejesus out of those ships passengers.

bigman01 Posted June 30, 2016 #5 Share Posted June 30, 2016 Had this happen to me a couple of years ago. We were on Carnival Magic, had been to Key West, Nassau and Freeport. We were headed back to Galveston, had left Nassau the day before. Off the coast of Key West, on a Friday morning. We were all sitting on our balcony. I started hearing a noise off in the distance, and it got louder and louder. Then suddenly a US Navy jet circled the ship - it had to be less than 100 yards from the ship. The whole thing lasted no more than 20-30 seconds from the time I first heard something until it was over. After it happened, we all just looked at each other as if to say "Did that really just happen?" It was, by far, one of the absolute coolest things that's ever happened to me on a cruise. Went back on the same itinerary last year and was hoping it would happpen again, but it didn't.
bakersdozen12 Posted June 30, 2016 #6 Share Posted June 30, 2016 (edited) if the faa gets the registration on the plane and finds out the pilot operating the controls, he or she will have their license suspended indefinitely. Exactly how is the FAA going to do that? It was a French military plane and I'm assuming, a French military pilot. The FAA governs American civil aviation. Further, it wasn't even an American ship that was involved. Edited June 30, 2016 by bakersdozen12
Yehootu Posted June 30, 2016 #7 Share Posted June 30, 2016 12 miles off any US shore is designated international waters. Not sure about the 3 mile gambling thing. Regan had part in shifting the boundary out to 12 miles from 3 miles. I started my flying career in Hawaii and we used to get a kick bussing the russian "fishing trawlers" 3 miles off of Pearl Harbor. They were there monitoring sub traffic in and out of Pearl. FAA regulations maintain a 500 foot vertical clearance and a 1000 foot horizontal clearance are to be maintained in a non-populated area. 5000 people on a cruiseship, you be the US Fed law judge. Very hard to prove and to prosecute. Doing it to the Pride of Aloha might get you into the bosses office, but otherwise prosecuting anyone isn't likely going to happen as all other ships are foreign registry. I've sailed out of San Diego on HAL had have had fighters hit afterburner right over the ship coming out of Miramar. Great way to start the cruise! I Love the smell of jet fuel in the morning (or evening as that was he it was)

kona_wahine Posted June 30, 2016 #9 Share Posted June 30, 2016 (edited) Happened to us on the Dream heading to western Carribean. Still don't know whose plane it was. What I can say it was very cool. DH and I were up walking around on I believe deck 5. We could hear it coming so saw the whole thing. Buzzed very low right over the ship. After that we could see them flying aways away by what looked to be an aircraft carrier. Didn't make me nervous, it was very cool. Google to see video .Crazy if u ask me I have yet to see any video of the jets flying over the cruise ship or even a "near miss" as some claimed. And yes, the jets had permission to do low altitude flying. It is not unheard of for military aircraft to fly by cruise ships. Or to cruise by an aircraft carrier with planes practicing touch and go maneuvers.
Rod in Az Posted June 30, 2016 #11 Share Posted June 30, 2016 Ok, I'm willing to pay extra to have a United States military jet do a close fly over while I'm on my balcony. Let me know how to sign up.....

MsVulcan Posted June 30, 2016 #15 Share Posted June 30, 2016 That would be so cool! I go outside when fighter jets fly over my house, so having them be so close would be awesome.
bptex Posted June 30, 2016 #16 Share Posted June 30, 2016 I live under the flight path for JRB Carswell which is shared with Lockheed. We get F-35s flying over regularly which will have an F-16 as an escort. That and there is an air force reserve unit that flies F-16s and a Navy/Marine unit with F-18s. We used to get B-52s and KC-135s all day as well but those are long gone. Anyway on topic sailing into Key West was awesome. There was a bi-plane circling the ship several miles out and then the Sun Downer Squadron from NAS Key West started flying around us. They do adversary training for the Navy/Marines and fly F-5s painted in hostile nation colors. So you'd see an Iranian flagged jet being chased by a USN F-18. It was pretty cool. crusinpsychRN Posted June 30, 2016 #17 Share Posted June 30, 2016 I was on a ship and a black helicopter was flying very close to the ship. It were go very low to the water, then back up and over the Lido deck to the other side. They were filming.

tree.critter Posted June 30, 2016 #20 Share Posted June 30, 2016 I am alarmed a bit by any pilot do fly bys just for the fun of it. Wasn't the captain of the Costa Concordia basically doing the same thing.....cruise by to show off to his friends.....deadly error in judgement. Not happy with the potential of an intentional crash into ship....like the planes that were flown into the twin towers. Just so much wrong with this nowadays. Je Souhaite Posted June 30, 2016 #22 Share Posted June 30, 2016 Saw this on the news this morning. With the video they were of course over-sensationalizing how close the wing tips were to the slide. I forget what country they said the plane was from.

Google to see video .Crazy if u ask me On a cruise to Mexico, we were headed north to Long Beach. Early in the morning we noticed that we were going the wrong direction, we were heading South. The captain informed us that the Navy was doing military exercises and we were ordered to turn around and head South. After about a hour or so, we turned and headed north again. I was on the promenade deck aft (on a Princess ship), when I saw a fighter jet heading straight at us, just as it got to the ship the jet zoomed up and over the ship. People were cheering, it was an awesome experience.

Lucky I was up on deck 11 above the lido at the time. Perfect view. I was surprised how many uptight people whined and complained the next morning in the theatre when they had the "ask us anything" with the crew.
