Can't bring soda on board anymore

I just read on another post that a passenger boarding today was told by the porter at the dock that he could not touch the passenger's case of soda. This is only July 3. He did not mention the dock but his signature said he is sailing on the Getaway this month.

 

We always put ours in a suitcase because it is just easier. Let the backup at the ports begin!

 

But which port?

 

Some ports *never* (well, in recent years) let shore staff handle cases of liquids.

 

Can OP carry it on themselves or not?

Nobody wishes a Norovirus outbreak . It is ironic that those defending NCL and "helpfully" advising that there is lots of water on the ships will also absolve them of all blame when people actually fill up their bottles at the buffet . People should be careful but this will be on NCL .

Posts over at NCL's Facebook page complaining about the water carryon rules are disappearing like crazy. All you see now are selfies onboard the ships.

 

Yes - they configured those isnap cameras on board the ships to post the pictures to the NCL facebook page. It is drowning out all of the complaint posts. I find that very manipulative and just downright disgusting.

I love reading these posts...so much angst, over trivial nonsense. "I don't like Pepsi and only drink Coke"..."There's going to be lines at the gang ways as people chug down water"...."We like to have bottled water in the room, don't wanna go to the booffet for a drink."..."Water packages are too expensive".."NCL is just a money grabbing meanie and I will NEVER sail with them again"...I also loved the post about sailing 2 days after the new rule goes into effect and by god, they are taking their soda and water and be dammed if anyone is going to say anything to them about it....geeze. Have we become that entitled as a society now that this type of thing sets everyone into a frenzy? Or is it just the social media angry mob mentality in effect?

 

From personal experience, after a dozen or so cruises I've never taken a flat of water, or case of soda on board. I bought a water package once, and never drank all the water that was in it. Taking a Nalgene bottle or some other type of refillable device seems to work well. The market is flooded with them. Have you checked out the Yeti cups (an their knock offs)? Keeps drinks icy cold for hours :p. I thank the gods that no one in my family drinks enough soda in a year that would justify schlepping a case up to the ship, much less having some minimum wage porter do it for me.

 

Here's a tip, (keep it to yourselves, wouldn't want it to get out)... you don't have to sail with NCL :eek:. If you have booked, go or NOT go, that's up to you. Grousing about such a trivial thing as not being able to slurp your favorite sugary beverage at will, or not being able to have your bottle when you want it...is well...pretty humorous. Its a vacation, try something new..leave the soda at home, search for alternative hydration methods that don't require bottles or cans. You might find that you like things out there even better....maybe :rolleyes:

I find this to be under-handed when I booked my cruise I did so knowing I would save money by bringing my own soft drinks on board and now that my cruise is three weeks out I receive a letter stating the change of policy. It would be different if they offered compensation for those who have already booked. But are basically saying screw you this is the way it is. Back to Carnival I go.

Just curious, and I am be sincere, but what type of compensation would satisfy you? What would it take to leave that soda in the fridge and just go enjoy that cruise without it? Also what type of soda and how much do you normally bring on the cruise?

I was curious about the Royal Princess crossing compared to the NCL crossings we have booked for fall 2017 on the Getaway and Epic. Both of our crossings are BD balconies with UBP, 4 night SDP and pre paid gratuities. We booked back in April of this year.

 

$3061.92 - 14 night Getaway

$2552.46 - 13 night Epic

 

I'm not sure what all Princess includes, but from a quick mock booking for 2 pax I came up with:

 

$4468.00 for cheapest balcony with Sip + Sail

$3098.00 for cheapest inside without Sip + Sail

 

Those are the only two categories I looked at, so there might be a deal out there for other cabins. I could be wrong, but I would think if the Jade does a fall crossing next year it would be comparable in price with the Getaway and Epic. The Princess crossing is 15 days, but to me it seems priced a bit higher for a couple extra days.

 

It's not just about price - We are spending about $1100 more to sail the Royal Princess vs doing the Epic - comparing minimum balcony to minimum balcony with prepaying gratuities and getting the beverage package promo on both lines.

 

To me I don't have confidence anymore that NCL will deliver the vacation I booked. Every few months there is a new fee, a new policy change, a new cutback - none of which have benefitted the passenger. I have a significantly higher level of confidence that Princess will deliver the experience I am purchasing. I also happen to like the design of the Royal Princess more than the NCL Epic or Getaway - much more connection to the the ocean, more and larger public venues that are not pay to eat dining rooms, more open and plentiful pool deck and sunning areas, better service, more enrichment activities/lectures and so on.

 

I had wanted to try the Jade as so many seem to love the Gem class. I had hoped her more outward focused design might help overcome all the changes, charges and nonsense of NCL. Everything that NCL has done in the last 18 months has demonstrated profits first, customers last. The carry on beverage ban is the latest and last of the changes that signal to me that there are other products that make me feel more valued and respected as a consumer, even if they do come at a higher cost.

Okay, folks, time for a reality check....

 

1> Given that another line (Carnival) has had reasonable success with this policy sticking, the odds they will rescind it entirely are slim, especially as its now considered just a matter of time before RCCL follows suit.

 

2> Given that there is an increased financial upside to this policy (call it cost containment, added sales, whatever), the odds of this being rescinded are slim.

 

3> Given in the case of bottled beverages there are actual security considerations, the odds of this being rescinded are slim.

 

Which means, most likely, it isn't going away, so complaining and saying you won't cruise again if they don't get rid of it means nothing.

 

What works is what people did with Carnival, which is give them options that worked for both parties, and Carnival took some of those suggestions..

 

When Carnival announced a similar policy, there was the same screaming, but a bunch of people also pushed the idea of selling bottled water cheaper. This has worked out for both parties. Carnival sells a 12 pack of bottles for $2.99 delivered to cabin if you pre-purchase, $4.99 on board, which while not cheap, is reasonable and doesn't have to go through security. (This is in comparison to NCLs equivalent six pack of larger bottles for $22.95 which is insane).

 

People also suggested that refillable mugs be part of the VIP packages, and they did, adding Tervis cups to the gift rotation. Also a good suggestion.

 

But that doesn't mean I can carry 'my brand'. Ok. Given the security issues, if enough people suggest perhaps allowing 1 SEALED 12 pack per person or something similar as carry on, that's a reasonable accommodation and might theoretically get approved at some point.

 

Now, in my book, where they really screwed up is timing, but again, there is an easy fix here. Offer those folks not able to cancel any more a substantial discount on water packages. This is the least likely to happen.

 

If you give a business alternatives that are at least partial wins on both sides, you might actually see positive movement. Saying 'do what I want or I go elsewhere, almost always means you go elsewhere or give in. If demand drops in the US, NCL will just move another ship to Asia, where there are an estimated 1 billion potential new passengers over the next 5 years.

Let's get one thing straight. I'm not taking this hard at all. I don't drink soda, and I don't carry on water. I recognize this as being another in a long line of NCL take-aways. It's been going on for years. My purpose in this thread is to simply point that out. But I've done that. But who the hell reads a 800 post thread? Most folks just skip to the end and comment on whatever is there. Like you've done.

 

You have no desire to schlep (sherp, ***?) soda on a ship. Good for you. Neither do I. Who cares? If you use that brain of yours you'll see that this issue is beyond diabetics and their soda and a couple of folks with swollen ankles.

Simple solution - drink beer!

 

The water has been boiled (so it is clean); it doesn't have high sodium (so no swollen ankles); hops are also an antiseptic/cleaning agent - and - most important - it tastes better than water!
