Summertime West Coast cruises?

Recommended Posts

Mine may be both a naive inquiry and posted in the wrong thread. If so, sorry.

My sister, who is a school teacher, is interested in a summer (July/August) west-coast cruise. I told her I'd do some research.

I am fully aware of the spring/fall cruises when ships are headed to/from Alaska. But July/August west coast cruises??

I thought, a year or so ago, I read that some cruise line was going to start doing regular west coast cruises. Maybe I read it wrongly. I can't find any such itineraries.

Help appreciated.

The only West Coast or Mexico in the summer are with Carnival. They cruise all year round from Long Beach to Mexico and short cruises.

I thought that at one time Carnival had some summer cruises but not in 2016/2017.

Checking the Port of LA cruise terminal schedule that confirms there are no cruise ships there in the summer.

Check the Long Beach Cruise port . It is used by Carnival all year round. If you check the Carnival site there are 4 and 7 day Mexico cruises.

Thanks...checking the Carnival schedule's available dates they are not as easy to view as on Princess so I missed the July & August 2016/2017 dates...my apologies for the incorrect information & edited my previous post to be only "Delete".

The money is in Alaska. So the ships are in Alaska.

That is the absolutely correct answer. As long as the Alaskan market continues to generate revenue the cruise lines will keep ships there as long as possible. If they could figure out a way to cruise there in Dec they would.

That is the absolutely correct answer.

But not "absolutely correct" for Carnival who has summer cruises from Long Beach (LA) which was the OP's question.

Being the only option from LA during the summer, Carnival has a monopoly & for that reason these cruises are probably profitable. They're most likely full of families with school age children who can only easily cruise during summer & holiday vacations and who want to drive (or take a short flight) to the port.

Your sister can talk with a cruise specialist (a TA who really knows cruises) to double check but Carnival has year-round cruises from Long Beach.

Royal Caribbean used to have the MR and Baja cruises but left this market (maybe about 8 or so years ago). Princess occasionally has coastals and MR but not usually during the summer as many of its ships are doing Alaskan itineraries.

Maybe she should consider an Alaskan one, but would have to go to SF, Seattle, Vancouver, or Anchorage to start one of those cruises. Or see if she could book a MR cruise for December.

Princess has a 10 day cruise to Alaska from San Francisco. There are 7 day RTN cruises from Seattle on Holland America , Princess , Royal Caribbean , Celebrity and NCL.

Vancouver has a similar cruise lines but most not all do 7 day NB and then 7 Day SB.

Those are Alaska cruises. OP is asking about Coastal cruises.

That's why I mentioned Alaskan cruises as an alternative itinerary to coastal cruises (some of which might go as far north as Vancouver, but many don't). But it sounds like her sister wants a coastal, and during the summer, when she has off from work.

Other than Alaska is Mexico with Carnival from Long Beach.

Ships can't do Pac Coastal cruises because of PVSA (Passenger Vessel Service Act). There needs to be certain criteria met for these to be legal...either start in Canada or Mexico, or if a round trip from a specific US city, they have to make a stop in Canada or Mexico.

That's why the many CA Coastal cruises & other roundtrip west coast cruises are required to make stops mostly in Ensenada.

Cruise lines regularly sail CA Coastal itineraries but only Carnival does them during the summer when they're probably full of families with school age children.
