FLL pier...anyone recently take golf bags? Porters accept or not?

Recommended Posts

Has anyone recently taken golf clubs on the ship in FLL? If so, did the porters accept the golf clubs to send on-board with the rest of your luggage or did you have to carry the clubs onto the ship yourself? We have had it both ways over the years but have not sailed out of FLL recently so am curious as to the current/most recent procedure.

Thanks.

I don't see why not?

ETA: The only thing that I have actually witnessed is golf clubs in the luggage area at the end of the cruise. If they take them off for you, I would hope that they would take them on board for you. :)

I cetainly hope you own a "golf club coffin" for your clubs. I wouldn't want those handlers throwing my clubs around the way they throw suitcases. We have traveled to Europe with our clubs in the past on airlines and clubs were fine in their "coffin."

Anyone?

Your profile doesn't give a clue if you are driving or flying to the port. I don't golf cruise week, but I have seen people check bags at the pier. If you are flying in keep your bag in the came configuration that you check it into the airline and you should be ok.

Thanks to everyone for your comments....I do appreciate them all...however I need to hear from someone that has cruised RC from FLL recently with their golf clubs.

The problem is we have had it both ways. For YEARS we simply handed our clubs (in travel covers) to the porters along with the rest of our luggage. Then the last time we sailed OA/AL with our clubs (maybe 2 years ago?) the porters refused to accept them. They said their contract/liability did not allow them to accept them. So we ended up carrying them on with us.

Hoping to check them with the porters but will carry them on if we must! Just trying to be prepared!!!

Yes we are flying in so clubs will be in nice padded case!

I sailed on Allure Labor Day 2014, just under two years ago. I was quite displeased to discover that they would not take my clubs. They were in a ClubGlove travel bag, hard sided bases and canvas body and top. I travel all over with it and it gets tossed around by baggage handlers with no problem.

So, I had to drag that bag all the way up to deck 17, I was not happy.

On the flip side, since they refused to take that bag, I now "refuse" to let them take my suitcase. I carry it with me and then don't have to wait for baggage to be delivered.:D

Thanks. I just checked our history and it was August 2013 when we had the problem. So it sounds like it is a permanent policy. If we have to we can take the golf clubs on with us along with our carry ons but definitely can't take the clothing bag also....have to give it to the porters.

I tried to carry some Golf clubs on Allure last December. They did not allow it at the security check point and stored them for the duration of the cruise. I was adviced to pick them up after debarkation.

Did they not allow you to use them during the cruise????

We had a similiar instance once on a different ship. Porters took clubs and they made it to,our room. We used them at the first port and then coming back they collected them and kept them at security until the end of the cruise....but we were able to use them at each port and then turn them back in to security afterwards each time. Actually worked well for us as we then had extra space in our room. Only that one cruise though.

That sounds like the way that they handled my daughter's dive knife. (very appropriate, in my opinion)

Good question SKi girl.

My hubby is thinking of taking them along in NOvember. Never thought about them taking them.

And I will need to check with him as far as his case. I don't really know if he has a hard case or not (can you tell I don't golf)

We don't use hard cases....just padded travel cases. We have taken our clubs on every cruise for umpteen years and only had trouble with them twice. The one incident on OA (FLL) with the porters and the other on a different ship with security holding them between ports.

I looked through my pictures, and it was Allure 2011 that I saw a porter take clubs at check in.. I remember talking to the owner on the shuttle over. I'll keep that in mind,

I can speak to how they DON'T take them getting on in Port Canaveral. They wouldn't take my wife's manual wheelchair (which we use as a backup in case her power chair fails.) When we asked why they said they only take luggage, NOT golf clubs or wheelchairs because of liability issues if they are damaged.

The good news is that you can take them directly to your room - even if its before 1PM. The stewards will let you put them in your room right away.

Hope this helps a little - enjoy your cruise!

Here is my original post (from SEVERAL YEARS ago) regarding the cruise where they held the clubs between ports but let us use them while in port. (This sailing was not out of FLL.)

I can't find the thread relating to the FLL porters refusing the clubs.

We have sailed RC a good many times and experienced a "first" this week. Our golf clubs were "confiscated". We have always taken our golf clubs and never had a problem with them. Does anyone remember the old "Golf Ahoy" program from years ago? They actually stored your clubs for you and even cleaned them between rounds, etc.

We did not have any trouble having them delivered to our room with our other luggage. On day 3 we got off of the ship with the clubs as normal and security said "have a good round", etc. just as usual. After going through security onboard upon our return that afternoon (and sending clubs through the x-ray machine as typical) we were pulled aside and told they would store our clubs in the security office and to let them know when we needed them the next morning. They asked for an inventory of the items and gave us a receipt. We thought they were being courteous and doing us a "favor" by storing our clubs in the security office. We thought this was great would give us more room in the cabin. The next morning we went down to the gangway and requested the clubs. They brought them out to us and Mr. Ski returned the "receipt" to them. Off we went for another day golfing.

On our return that afternoon...they once again pulled us aside after we had gone through security (and the clubs had gone through the x-ray). They said they would once again store them for us. Mr. Ski explained that we would not be golfing again the rest of the trip so that we wouldn't need them again. They said "no problem" and that they would keep them until the last day.

So on the last day (well next to last day I guess...packing day)....Mr. Ski went down to security to get the clubs. He was told he could not have them as they were considered "confiscated" as they are "sports equipment". He explained to them that we needed them to put them in their travel covers and to put miscellaneous items (protection...i.e. dirty clothes) around them inside the travel covers. So 3 security guards escorted him (and carried the clubs) to our cabin. They told us to call them when the bags were packed and they would come get them and then we would have to retrieve them from the "naughty table" shoreside. So that is what we did.

Everyone was very friendly and accommodating during the process of us needing to pack our things on the last day. Our surprise was that what we thought was “complimentary storage” turned into something else related to a “policy” of having the clubs secured away from the cabin during the voyage. We just wish they would have explained it to us the first day they took them for storage. We would have understood and would not have had an issue with it at all. We just felt like it should have been explained as a ”policy” rather than letting it come across as a “courtesy”.

We had just never experienced this before and had not heard of it. I do not see anything on the RC site that indicates golf clubs as confiscated items. This is what I see on the website:

Onboard Policies

Q: What items are not allowed onboard the cruise ship?

A: Weapons, illegal drugs, and other items that could interfere with the safe operation of the ship or the safe and secure environment of our guests and crew are prohibited. The following are examples of items that guests are not allowed to bring onboard. These and other similar items will be confiscated upon being found. Alcoholic beverages, illegal drugs, flammable liquids, explosives, and dangerous chemicals will not be returned..

Prohibited items: Firearms & Ammunition, including realistic replicas.

Sharp Objects, including all knives and scissors. (Note: Personal grooming items such as safety razors are allowed. Scissors with blade length less than 4 inches are allowed.)

Illegal Drugs & Substances

Candles & Incense

Coffee Makers, Clothes Irons, & Hot Plates

Baseball Bats, Hockey Sticks, Cricket Bats, Bows & Arrows

Illegal Drugs

Skateboards & Surfboards

Martial Arts Gear

Self-Defense Gear, including handcuffs, pepper spray, night sticks.

Flammable Liquids and Explosives, including lighter fluid and fireworks.

HAM Radios

Dangerous Chemicals, including bleach and paint.

Alcoholic Beverages (Note: Alcoholic beverages that are purchased in ports-of-call or from shops onboard will be stored by the ship and delivered to you on the last day of the cruise.)

Just curious if anyone else has experienced this or heard of a policy change?
