Adult only pool on HAL

We have just returned from a Med cruise on board the Oosterdam and were pleased to note that the attendants at the Seaview pool were very good at making sure this remained an adult only pool for much of the cruise; I will say though that the signage is very confusing for everyone, even if you did read English:confused:.

According to the attendants, the pool and two hot tubs are for the use of those over 18 only. The signage however, did not state this.

On a side note, the Lido pool had the more comfortable loungers, but the Seaview was quieter and it was easier to find a sunbed.

I allowed my very well behaved 13 year old grandson in the adult pool, for the brief times we were in it together. My position is that I have to pay adult prices for him so he should be allowed to use the pool. No one said anything to object and I agree the signs were confusing.

However, as an aside, the pool needs a better filtration system - too many dead bugs and band aids floating around for me. Maybe that is why it was not used that much.

What rules did I not follow? The sign said children under 18 must be accompanied by an adult. We paid adult prices for him; he gets to use the adult pool. If he started acting like a child I would have evicted him myself. He was much better behaved than some of the adults we saw. And, as I said in my original post, we were not in the pool that much - maybe 30 minutes for the entire 12 day cruise.

That sign is at the main Lido pool, isn't it? Not at the Seaview pool...

You should have gone to Alaska--too cool for bugs.

Good for you. I will do the same with my teenagers. They won't pee in the pool, splash others, whine and scream, nor leak a dirty diaper - so it shouldn't be a problem for anyone else.

The adult pool is for adults.

It is really sad the way children are raised with a me me me mentality and that rules do not apply to them.

I paid the same as kids but would never dream of being entitled to go into the kids club rooms.

It's a real pity that well behaved youngsters can not use both pools, especially if they wish to swim laps. Unfortunately, these well behaved youngsters can not go around with a sign above their head or wear a placard stating they are well behaved or have paid the full adult rate rather than a reduced fare. Under 18's can not use the casino either - do you also say they have paid the adult rate and should be allowed to use it? A strange point to make.

On our cruise, there were several very large groups of European teenagers who monopolized both pool areas until the attendants stepped in. This as you can imagine is a very delicate matter, but they did an outstanding job explaining this to the youngsters who were, for the most part unaccompanied and left to roam around the ship. Parents who make life very difficult for the attendants are not serving their offspring well in the long run. It is just a matter of being considerate to fellow passengers and allowing everyone to enjoy their vacation.

One adult pool is a small concession for those who wish to enjoy a more peaceful area. Thank you HAL.

I called HAL a few days ago and asked about adult only pool and they said they don't have one. puzzled.

The rules vary from ship to ship, and change over time. Sometimes I've seen in the daily program that the aft pool is "requested" to be adult only.

We don't use ship pools (we have one at home) but I feel that whatever rules they make should be enforced.

This was on the Statendam

and a few years later this was on the Noordam

Did they enforce the adults only rule? And did they enforce the unoccupied chair rule?
Sorry, I don't know. We spent very little time around the aft pool, and it was usually in the morning when there few or no swimmers or sun bathers.

I bolded both of the sentences because I agree with these posters..To the poster who permitted his/her 13 year old grandson to use the adult pool only, wouldn't you be upset if someone over 18 went into the teen only area's on the ships & used the equipment or went into a teen club & pool &/or dressing room on land & used the facilities ? I know I would.. We took our Son to Europe when he was 15 & would not have ever taken take him into an adult only area of any venue..

Think about it, you are teaching your grandson that rules don't apply to him.. Your Grandson paid the adult rate because he is eating & sleeping in a cabin like an adult.. At 13 he is probably eating more than most adults..I too have seen the me me attitude of teens & parents who have not learned that there are rules in this world which must be followed.. That's why so many teachers have problems with unruly kids in their classes..

To the poster who permitted his/her 13 year old grandson to use the adult pool only, ...
But to be fair, the signs/rules sometimes allow it or are unclear or contradictory, as shown by my sign pics in post #15. Edited by jtl513

doubleduty, IMO the bolded sentence in your Post above said all that needed to be said ... not that you owed anyone on here an explanation or defense.

Smooth sailing ...

Inconsistency on any rule, where ever it may be, is always where companies run into trouble. Make a sensible judgement and then enforce it.:)

Ding! Ding! Ding! Ding! Ding!

Hold your calls, folks. We have a winner!

When there is a clearly marked "adults only" area, and the adult allows their "well behaved" non-adult to enter, they are not only giving the child permission to break rules, but they are also telling all the other children that it's all right to break rules. "If he can go there, so can I." Those kids may not be so well behaved.

Adults have earned the right to some space of their own, especially when there is another place that serves the same purpose for the kids.

Understand that, But according to Copper10-8 the ships Officers make the decision about the "adults only" pool & it is then posted in the daily newsletter.. I found Coppers's Post 19 in a 2008 thread..

http://boards.cruisecritic.com/showthread.php?t=817247&highlight=oosterdam+adults+only+pool

However this poster stated that she let her 13 year old swim in the adult pool only because she "paid an adult fare" for him! That is what I'm questioning since the original OP stated the AFT pool was for "Adults only" & the staff enforced it on her cruise.. Was this poster on the same cruise & if so when another poster asked her what the AFT pool sign said she completely ignored that question.. Did the sign say "Adults Only" or is she using one of the signs which you posted as her excuse for letting her 13 year old swim..

That is only what I'm questioning..It would help if Copper or perhaps the original OP saw this thread & had a picture of the pool signs on the Oosterdam today..

I always knew you were a wise woman, Ruth:)

I was thinking about the previous post with the "well behaved child" . That like food is very subjective. Too many parents think Johnny is so cute as he misbehaves and every one else is annoyed by his behavior.

On our March Zuiderdam cruise there were some adorable well behaved kids in the aft pool but there were also a bunch of older teens who did cannonballs and skimmed their football across the pool and made it obvious we were in their way.

You can't have an adults only pool and let in the "good" kids but keep out the disruptive ones.

And you are so right, there is another pool.

Our experience with the rowdy kids happened every sea day more than once a day and we are now seriously considering our next cruise on Celebrity because they enforce the no kids in the Solarium pool.

I love HAL, but I spend most of the day in the pool and do not like being jumped on or hit with the ball. Not my idea of relaxing sea day.

If I want to swim with a bunch of kids I'll go on Disney. I'm not a kid hater, I just raised mine to be considerate of others and that seems a lost art.
