New Orleans hotel opinions

Recently booked a cruise out of New Orleans for next year and since everyone here is so helpful and knowledgeable about these things I figured this would be the best place to start my pre cruise hotel search. Looking for information on where people stayed and what they liked about the place. Thanks in advance!

I have stayed at the Sheraton Hotel on Canal Street a number of times and would do it again. It is across the street from the French Quarter. A number of attractions are within walking distance as well as several very well known and expensive restaurants. It is also a short distance from the Port of New Orleans.

Enjoy your cruise and this very historic city.

We've stayed at the Drury in the Business District (Poydras Street -- the same street Harrah's is on). Great hotel. If you've never stayed at a Drury, it's a bit different. They offer free nightly drinks and food (which can include salad, nachos, baked potatoes, wings, etc.). Their free breakfast was also very good.

Although not in the French Quarter, it's a good location and very walkable to the Quarter (though maybe not a smart idea at night) and down to the Riverwalk area.

We're booked at the Omni Royal Orleans for a couple nights for a November cruise on the Dawn. You can't beat its central location in the FQ, and it's a couple streets down from Bourbon so there's a decent buffer from all the craziness.

I've stayed at least at 10 different NO properties. I mostly stay at the La Quinta, which is excellent for location. I am cheap- so, have walked to the ship from there, and from the cheap airport bus. :) Safe to walk late night, which I usually do. Convenient for buses, and streetcars too. easy run to Walmart, via bus. :)

that is on the Hop ON Hop Off Bus route?

I have the day prior and the morning of our cruise to do as much sight seeing as possible.

Not a good choice in my opinion.

I suggest free tours by foot, http://www.freetoursbyfoot.com/new-orleans-tours/walking-tours

and taking a ride on the St. Charles Streetcar. If you want a cemetery tour, I like Save our Cemetery.

We have stayed at the Crowne Plaza Astor and the Marriott Renaissance .Both are very close to the French Quarter. If you have joined your trip's roll call someone may have organized a group rate for a particular property. We got a great rate for the Crowne that way .I believe it was under$130 .Check some sites for booking hotels eg. Trivago dot com. Last couple of times we booked somewhere going and directly booking with the hotel was a better deal . Good luck and enjoy your trip.

Comfort Inn on O'Keefe, 2 blocks off Canal.

You need to check on whether Mardis Gras will affect you if you are going in February/March.

Luddite is right. Always book NOLA early and arrive the day before.

We can drive to NOLA in approximately 5 1/2 hrs with good conditions. BUT by time we hit Baton Rouge traffic can slow way down and what should then be a 1 hour drive to the port can sometimes be as much as 3 hours. It's not just Mardis Gras, but also events at the Superdome, highway accidents, fog, etc.

Have stayed at the NOLA Drury several times and can honestly say I do not like it and the Holiday Inn in the Quarter is downright scary.

If you ever go to any of the Caesar's properties for gaming, check with them and you might be able to get a cheap room. They are only blocks form the port. We are getting a room comped the night before and after the cruise.

Harrah's New Orleans! We've stayed there, not fully comped but it was about $75/night. Close to the port too.

I almost always stay at Harrahs because I can get good rates, and it is a beautiful hotel. Only downside in the summer is that it doesn't have a pool. And it gets REALLY hot in New Orleans.

  • 1 month later...

I just booked the Marriott on Canal for the night prior to the Dawn Christmas cruise. AAA rate $87 plus tax put the cost just over $100. I figured this was a great rate for an excellent property. It will likely be beautifully decorated during the holidays.

I'll be staying there for a conference later this month so I decided to just check for my pre cruise night. I was shocked and happy for the price.

Food is so good in New Orleans venturing out for breakfast will be a treat.
