Captain announced during muster drill that departure had been delayed until 6:00 p.m. due to port traffic. Saturday departure this week is different from Freedom's old schedule. It ended up being 6:35 - 6:40 before we left, maybe we were waiting for late flight arrivals booked through Royal.

This was known well in advance, not sure why the Captain said port traffic? Several T/A's a few weeks ago scheduled a big port send off for the ship's first voyage and last week it was rescheduled for next week due to an announced later departure. I was told a week ago it was leaving at 7pm so in theory the ship left early.

Big port send off? What does this mean ? I'm just curious because I was at the port today with some friends and was kind of surprised there wasn't more going on since this was the first sailing. We're sailing next week on her.

Heck the Victory may have even added to the traffic!! There were four ships scheduled to be in PC yesterday... A Mouse boat, Carnival, Oasis and one of the AIDA cruise ships. Also may have to consider pilot availability.

Not exactly a sleepy little backwater port;). Depending on whose stats you wish to quote PC is the second busiest cruise port in Florida.

You go on the port's schedule and not yours. When a pilot is available and the channel is clear dictates when you leave. Oasis will take Freedom's slot and Freedom always ported on Sundays. So that left Oasis at the bottom of the priority ladder for leaving times on Saturday. She will change to Sunday departures on the next cruise and probably take Freedom's old spot in the departure rotation. Port Canaveral is a busy port.

But come on, now ... its the first day of OASIS OF THE SEAS in this port ... they could have made her the priority ... at least on that day!

What kinda welcome was that ?! ;)

There are currently only 8 pilots in the Port Canaveral Pilot's Association. These guys handle all the traffic in and out of the port, not just cruise ships, and must meet state and federal guidelines for work and rest hours, so at any given time there are likely only 3 pilots on duty, with maybe a 4th scheduled for cruise ship day times.

Pilots make way more money than almost everyone on CC, and way more than cruise ship Captains, they own the association, and their fees are determined by governmental agencies, so they really don't respond at all to pressure; they will handle ships as they see fit.

It just means there will be more people than normal watching the ship sail away. It was scheduled for the 5th then changed (over a week ago) to the 13th when the ship gets back from its first voyage.
