The Port of Napier has a tricky entrance and often ships can't get in if it is too windy. The Captain has done well to get in with such a large ship. Maybe the wind has died down a bit.

As Aus Traveller says, that 90* turn would require skill as it's quite tight.

 

Golden Princess has had to bypass Gisborne today and proceed straight to Wellington.

The tender anchorage there is exposed, so that is hardly a surprise.

About 2.5 - 3m southerly swell straight into the anchorage today.

Yes , it can be a tricky port. One year ,one of the HAL ships got alongside the wharf , but with the tidal current and the winds could not hold there ...so had to make its way out again and miss the call.

I was on the Golden Princess for the Christmas cruise. Funny we went to Gisborne and then had to bypass Wellington due to the weather.
