$1 bills

I also have all my smaller bills when I get on the ship. I put what I need in a small box similar to a checkbox and put it in the safe and only carry what I need for the day,

I have larger bills along as well, but I like to have plenty of singles, fives and ten's along too.

We bring out money for our cruise and have it broken down into different denominations ahead of time then keep in are safe. I have also split up some ahead of time for extra tips to our room steward, waiter & assistant waiter and put in envelopes and take with us that morning only what we will use while in port.

I firmly believe in the Dave Ramsey envelope system. I have a spreadsheet of all anticipated expenses. Close to sail date, I put cash in labeled envelopes for each event. A taxi that cost $16 would have a $10, $5 and $1. But it would also have an extra $4 for tip. Room service has twenty $1 bills. And so forth.

Everything that we need cash for is like this. What can I say? I am anal. The envelope packet tends to get pretty bulky with a lot of $1 for different things. I just was trying to make it a little less bulky. A ton of $1's has worked before. And it will again.

It's so nice to see someone as anal retentive as me. :D

I have a detailed, and laminated itinerary for each couple in our group. Also before we leave, I go to the bank and get singles, 5s, 10, and 20s, and I separate them into envelopes for different activities. It just gives me piece of mind and gives me one less thing to think about once we're cruising.

Happy sailing !!

I saw on another post that you can exchange larger bills for $1 bills. It would sure be easier to bring $50s and get them changed to smaller bills on the ship. Has anyone had any problems doing this? I would hate to find out they had a limited number on $1 and we didn't have the proper tip money.

Not anal at all, DH is just the same, splits the cash in envelopes for the different circumstances.

With regards changing larger bills for singles. We visit either the casino or Guest services and split down to 10s,5s and ask for 10 in ones but if they can give more it would be appreciated. We always visit Guest services on a port day to do this and the casino on a sea day in the afternoon, i.e. When it is quiet and the staff are not hassled. Repeat as necessary :).

Have a great cruise.

I always go to the bank and get:

$100 1's

$100 5's

$100 10's

Call me overkill, but I always have the correct amount!

Ahhh almost time to head over to Majesty, it's CRUISE DAY! :D

Bon Voyage Michael!

20-40 $100's .... depending on length of cruise for Casino play. This is about the discount the both of us get from Club Royale.

Then $500 different bills for tipping...

Just got off Navigator last week. Had no problems going into the casino and exchanging a $10 for 10 $1's. No refusal and no fee and no worries. They also have bill breaker machines in the casino.

I also went to guest services one day and changed a $100 for 10 $10's but that took a bit longer than the casino. I would just travel with $50 in 1's and leave it at that.

Well,.....when I go to the bank I get 2500 $20.00's, 2500 $50.00s and 1000 $100.00 bills. Then I get 1 million dollars from the casino bank........

..............isn't it easier to put a couple bucks per drink on your tab and hand your room attendant as well as the waiters LARGE bills in an envelope? I do get tired transporting all that cash in my Brinks truck to the ship........:p

Same experience on the Oasis a few weeks ago. Love the bill breaker machine. Instead of going to the cashier, you can put your winning slot tickets in it and it dispenses cash. I also used it to get change. I would put a $100 bill in it and it would give me 5 $20's. Then I would put in a $20 and it would give me two $10's, etc. etc........to me it felt like I was winning on the slots, put in one bill and get a bunch of other ones back. :D

We've been refused at Guest Services a few times, trying to get dollar bills from a $20. I'd get your dollars before you get on the ship.

Absolute Ditto for me as well. Counted on GS giving me 1.00 bills from the 20's

I brought on board, and found very cold response at the desk on one ship that told

me" we don't have enough to give you 20 of them". I could only get five ones,

begrudged at that, and ended up having to get change at the next port.

I ALWAYS take a pack of ones (50.00) on cruises of 7 nights or longer now.

Super easy to get some at the bank before we sail.

I clean out my wallet every weekend and put the ones in a ziplock. You'd be amazed how much money you have when it's time to get on the ship. ;)

John, could you please train my wallet to accept clean out of magically appearing

20.00 bills as well? ;) :p :p

I'm another one who keeps extra 10s, 5s, and 1s in an envelope at home and just pack them in with my things when I cruise. We use the envelope system for ports and keep one for each port, one for casino and one for tips at the hotel, shuttle and porters. I just take out more than I need for groceries and such each week and break all my 20s so I have more for my cruising envelopes! :p

Sometimes they don't want to give you too many ones at a time, but you can always get them. Guest Services, casino - take your pick.

I can ALWAYS find someone who will break larger bills for me.

If you have to, take $50, break it into 20's and a 10, then break those one at a time.

If you are lucky (;)), your casino will have an automatic voucher ticket machine which also breaks bills.

Then you don't even have to deal with human beings. ;)

I'd suggest going to the bank and requesting $2 bills instead, cut down on the size of the wad you're carrying.

That might be an issue for spending on islands that take dollars but it isnt the official currency - not just for you, but the crew you tip.

Most people in the US dont know the $2 is still printed and is legal. The good folks in Antigua or Dominica are much less likely to know about it and be willing to accept it.

Same with $1 and .50 coins

Also true for any bills in poor condition.

I like to get about $50 in cash -- maybe $20 in ones, the rest in fives -- from the bank before we leave home. It's not bulky or difficult to carry, and then you have tips for the trip to your port city, and you don't have to spend a single minute of your vacation "trading money" or possibly being told they don't have enough.

As do some others...

For those who take a ton of singles, do you use them as singles or are you using two at a time?

Until this thread came out, I didn't realize I was such a crazy risk taker for boarding a ship with $100 in dollar bills.

What was I thinking??
