Staying in touch on board....

Ok...I researched "walkie talkies" and from what I read they are not worth using, not to mention they annoy other passengers and I can see why. Post it notes are fine but do not work if you really need to get in touch and the other person does not know you need them. Normally when on a cruise I am only with my husband and we have no real need to stay in touch....usually we are together. This time I will be with my 2 brothers, one of whom is a "special needs" ( cerebral palsy ) person. He will be in the cabin with my other brother....long story short, if they are out and about together I need to stay in touch with them due to my disabled brother ( I am his caretaker as well ).....So, I am wondering if there is a "house phone" on each deck where we can leave and retrieve voices messages to their cabin or our's? That would be a big help. If not I am sure we will be fine....but it would be nice if I could count on better communication then a sticky note.

Depending on which ship you'll be on, the NCL iConcierge app may be the answer for you. You download it for free onto your cell phones before boarding, and then can use it on board for a fee (paid per device) to communicate with others who have the app. I've only used it for its free features (checking activites, my account, etc.) and not to message others onboard, so I can't speak personally as to how well the communication feature works. Hopefully others can (and also, once the search function here on CC is back up and running, you can do a search on here for iConcierge, as this definitely has been discussed).

(And you are right. Walkie talkies are a horrible annoyance. Thanks for being sensitive to that.)

Each cabin on the ship has a phone with voice messaging and wake up alarm service.

For the usual where are you I want to meet - meet me in St. Louis meet me at the bar - - -

There is a house phone on each deck near the elevators/stairways - it may not be readily visible look for it somewhere

around the you are here (X) display of the ship's deck when you get on board familiarize yourself were it is at.

You may not be able to call someone at that location but you can call your cabin - and leave a message.

If in a suite class cabin most NCL ships provide a cell phone for guest use.

You will of course always find one in the main atrium Guest Relations - Restaurant reservations perhaps Shore excursions

and at the Matri' D desk in the MDRs. There are phones available near the Buffet inquire with the crew about where they are.

The Casino and gift shops duty free may have one as well as the bars.

If you have your own cell phone - ask about sync it with the ships phone service (for a fee of course) also note that your

cell phone can be used off the ship in a limited range - and also maybe coordinated with the country you are visiting.

Inquire about this with your cell phone service provider.

In an Emergency look for a ranking crew member (the guy/gal with stripes on the shoulder) they have portable cell type phones

and the all else fall back - YELL FOR HELP.

If the cruise is on the Breakaway, iConcierge will work fine. You need to pay the on-time charge per phone. You will get a on-ship phone number that can be dialed between phones. Or text messages between phones.

You can always go the public phones in every stairwell landing and call your room/brother's room. Voicemail works, but you have to consciously look at the phone to see if the message light is on.

Unfortunately the NCL Voicemail System does not allow remote retrieval of messages (meaning that you can't call your stateroom from another location to see if a brother left a message.... you have to physically be at the phone to retrieve the message)

Yeah....that's what I thought! Wouldn't it be great if you could? It would eliminate going back and forth to your room. Well the Iconcierge app sounds like our answer. Thanks!

Thanks a bunch. Sounds like the Iconcierge app is something to consider. Wonder if it only works on IPhones. Hmmm....I will check all this out. Thanks again.

Have you contacted the accessibility assistance desk? They might have a way you can keep in touch that isn't available to regular cruisers. We've used them and they are great about providing wheelchairs for boarding and even distilled water for CPAP machines.
