witchegirl Posted February 27, 2017 #1 Share Posted February 27, 2017 I had weight loss surgery last year, so I can only eat small amounts of food. I think ordering two appetizers would suit me (I'm also vegetarian, and I usually prefer the appetizer options to the entrees). I know I could eat in the buffet (and did on a cruise with my mother last October) but I'm travelling solo on a 20 day cruise next month, and I would prefer to eat some of my meals in the MDR with other people. Is it weird to just order appetizers?
ECCruise Posted February 27, 2017 #2 Share Posted February 27, 2017 Not in the least weird. We do it all the time. Eating sensibly is much more important than being concerned about what others may think. Go for it!
spidybabe Posted February 27, 2017 #3 Share Posted February 27, 2017 Not weird at all. You should do what makes you happy. Most of the portions aren't that large in the MDR, and sometimes if I want to try something different, I just ask for a half or smaller portion. TrumpyNor Posted February 27, 2017 #4 Share Posted February 27, 2017 Like others have stated before me; it is not weird at all! I sometimes do that myself, just because I am not that hungry that day, or simply because the appetizers sounds more interesting.... :)
SunnyKitty Posted February 27, 2017 #5 Share Posted February 27, 2017 Not at all :) I do it a lot on land as well. I love to eat different food and regular entree is just to huge and boring for me

cage keeper Posted February 27, 2017 #7 Share Posted February 27, 2017 I do this all the time. I love apps. We are planning Ocean Blu, even with the up charge and I am looking at 3 apps, no main course.
Tatka Posted February 27, 2017 #8 Share Posted February 27, 2017 Not at all. I've done it several times. I'd rather try several (or all interesting) appetizers if I cannot find entree I want.

mearsfansinboise Posted February 27, 2017 #11 Share Posted February 27, 2017 That's my plan too - I just had weight-loss surgery in June and this is my first cruise post-surgery. I recall once on a HAL cruise there was this delicious appetizer of shrimp in some sort of peanut sauce. It was sooo good. I kept ordering those ... like too many ... but that ended up being my meal. And I foresee doing something like this on my cruise next month.
mugtech Posted February 27, 2017 #12 Share Posted February 27, 2017 I would imagine if Platinum you could do the same at the specialty restaurant, replacing a main course with an additional soup or appetizer.
OCruisers Posted February 27, 2017 #13 Share Posted February 27, 2017 Gosh, I do this frequently ... even at home from time to time. Normally, order two and ask the waiter to bring one as an appetizer and the other as my main course. ;)
jennybenny Posted February 27, 2017 #14 Share Posted February 27, 2017 It's fine! Go for it! I do it at home (restaurants we frequent) often. I don't do it often on cruises but also remember you can order an appetizer portion of the pasta [emoji4] Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
L-in-CLT Posted February 27, 2017 #15 Share Posted February 27, 2017 No weirder than ordering all the appetizers and all the desserts on the menu which I did on an RCL cruise once. :) Sent from my iPad using Forums
Travelling2Some Posted February 28, 2017 #16 Share Posted February 28, 2017 I do it all the time both on land and at sea. It's my normal habit and all waiters seem accustomed to it so I must not be alone.

Cruising...our happy place Posted February 28, 2017 #18 Share Posted February 28, 2017 Lots of great apps, soups and salads! We like to try new ones each cruise. Happy cruising. Sent from my iPad using Forums
kathy884 Posted February 28, 2017 #19 Share Posted February 28, 2017 I'm an appetizer / salad lover who prefers those two course to entrée and dessert. Just saying when I go out to dinner, I often order an appetizer and just specify that I'd like that served as my main course. // I have the free at sea three specialty dining promotion and I may do it there too, as sensible eating is a higher priority for me than getting the most food for my money. This strategy lets me eat with DH without feeling like I am stuffing myself too much. // Haven't cruised on NCL since the 90s, but head out on the Escape this Saturday. I will be doing the same thing there that I do on land, if that sounds most appealing to me.
leithbones Posted March 2, 2017 #20 Share Posted March 2, 2017 When eating at an a la carte specialty restaurant, this can be much a less expensive meal while still getting a good sampling of the venue (if not using a SDP). >>>>Just a nice side benefit, not a main reason to order apps only. Love to Cruise DS Posted July 15, 2017 #23 Share Posted July 15, 2017 I am in the same position and have cruised many times. I always just order appetizers. No one has ever said a word. Actually they ask me if I want a larger portion of it for my meal and I always say no thank you! Sent from my iPhone using Forums

Is it weird to just order appetizers? It's your cruise, and your vacation. I hope you'll do whatever makes you happy--not just in the dining room, but everywhere you go. If you just want appetizers, please just get appetizers and don't worry about what anyone may or may not think. No one will think anything of it by the way (I order the Wagyu Sliders as a 'main' in Cagney's) and no one's ever said a thing...but that's not what's important. I hope you really enjoy your cruise.
