New Princess livery ugly?

Although the decor is a little different (more contemporary), it is still "Princess". As for the interior layout of the Royal-class, I posted this back in 2014:

"For all intent and purposes the Royal-class and Grand-class really aren't that much different in their general layouts:

- Main showrooms (Princess Theater and aft main showroom) are in the exact same place.

- Main Dining Rooms (all three of them) are in the same exact place.

- Atrium and it's three main venues (International Cafe, Vines, Crooners) are in the exact same locations.

- The gift shops are all pretty much in the exact same area.

- Not all Sabatini's and Crown Grill restaurants are in the same place on all Grand Class, nor are all casinos, however...

- The Casino is still basically in the same place.

- The three elevator banks are in the exact same place.

- The alternate entertainment venue (Princess Live) is in the exact same place as it's corresponding venue on the Grand-class ships.

- The main interior thoroughfare on Promenade Deck (from Princess Theater at the very front of the ship to the aft showroom at the stern) still runs along the exact same path.

- The main pool deck venues (Prego, Trident Grill, soft serve ice cream, Mermaids Tail bar) are all in the same general areas as on the Grand-class.

- The Horizon Court and Outrigger Bars are in the same place.

- The Sanctuary is in the same place.

Now, if you're more specific and say that that the new location of the Fitness Center wasn't where you'd like it to be, or the combination venue of the Crown Grill and Wheelhouse Bar doesn't work for you, or the atrium was too big for you, or the Spa location and Photo Gallery location was weird, then we have specifics. But that's all still just personal opinion.

I spent two weeks on Royal Princess and on Day 1 found it very easy to make my way around the ship. I'm sure having studied the deck plans for six months helped, but the general layouts of the Royal Princess really isn't that much different than Ruby Princess."

So, you see it really isn't stupid in design and layout. That is unless you've never been on a Grand-class Princess ship and we're just lost for the entire week and didn't look at the deck plans.

A bit late in responding, but thank you for pointing out the obvious STUPID aspects of a royal class ship despite trying to hide them:

You have to enter on deck 6 or 7 and remove yourself to re-enter the theater onto the other deck. Also, passengers do not have the have mobility in the aisles or the tables to hold a drink. STUPID.

The aft showroom was put together with duct tape where the chairs did not turn and were so close to each other and poorly placed that it was uncomfortable, at best. STUPID.

Crown Grill and Wheelhouse now share the same space (back to back). STUPID. While some guy is pounding out show tunes, music listeners are hearing dishes clanging and banging and diners are drown in, well, show tunes. Lovely.

Also, there were no central stairs over deck 7 when we were on it (2013). So the staff had to open up theirs???

Sabatini's is now interior on a lower level off of the Promenade (that also doesn't exist).

Crooners is off in a corner, dark and no fun, with compromised sight lines because the powers that be thought that dueling pianos would work there.

There are only 2 elevator banks. Fore and Aft.

Also, the STUPID TV Studio taking the place of the multi-purpose Explorers Lounge was a waste acting as a glorified College Lecture Hall. Who wants that on vacation???

The HC was truly replaced with a much better set up. But, the rest of the ship seemed like an afterthought.

Let's face it, the stupid fountains by the small mid-pool did not make up for the lack of an aft pool.

The Spa was around (forgive me for not checking . . . it's too painful) and off of the Promenade Deck forward where the receptionist had to get up for everyone checking in and press the button by the Spa door because it is not an auto-open. Also, when I had a Phyto hair treatment (going through illness), neither the chairs nor the sink could adjust for a wash for my 5' 5" height and I had to sit on the equivalent of a "phone book". On a cruise ship?

Also, the poor attendant in the Spa Locker Room had to bring me a handful of keys to try to find out which one would fit a locker that I could potentially choose, as the ship did not have them coordinated.

Please make all the excuses that you want, but that ship is a joke.

As I now feel, based upon my experiences in the last 8 (and especially 3-4 years), PCL may never recover from what they have brought upon themselves.

There are most definitely three lift banks on the Royal Class, just like there are Grand Class ships. Horizon Court is vastly better, both in organisation/layout and range of food available. It could do with coffee stations at the front of the buffet rather than just the middle. Although it is nice to have the additional option of free hot chocolate.

Not that I agree with all of your complaints but didn't you post that you'll be going back on the Royal later this year?;)

Rust staining under the anchor well has always bothered me. Presumably it comes from water running off the chain & anchor. It sure looks ugly, especially on a white background. Could not a resistant finish be applied?

It less expensive to have the crew just repaint every port. ;)

It comes from the anchor gouging big sections of paint down to bare metal as its stowed/deployed, and yes then sea water running off the anchor and as well as a fresh water rinse system in the hawse pipe as the crew weigh the anchor.

My response in Post #94 was in regards to this statement: "We have been on the Royal and considered it nothing short of STUPID in design and layout."

The key word here being layout. Location of the spaces.

Your post above #127 argues functionality. Function of the spaces.

Not the same.

A lot of the spaces you had issues with in regards to their functionality, I had no (as in zero) issues. I didn't visit the spa or beauty salon. Issues with functionality can be 'user dependent', therefore the argument is one sided.

A lot of people say they've felt lost on the Royal-class, whereas my argument above was that the layout of the main public rooms are, for the most part but not in all cases as I had mentioned, were quite similar to that of ships like the Ruby Princess class of ships.

Sabatini's is now interior on a lower level off of the Promenade (that also doesn't exist). Sabatini's is on the Plaza deck, two decks below the Promenade deck.

Crooners is off in a corner, dark and no fun, with compromised sight lines because the powers that be thought that dueling pianos would work there. Crooner's is in the same location as on several other Princess ships such as the Ruby, Emerald and Crown.

There are only 2 elevator banks. Fore and Aft. And the center third bank which many people used since the center stairs were not available when you were on the ship.

The Spa was around (forgive me for not checking . . . it's too painful) and off of the Promenade Deck forward... Actually on the Plaza deck, two decks below the Promenade deck.

I can't even believe this is an issue. Does the livery impact you when you are eating a wonderful dinner in the MDR? Does it bother you when you are enjoying a cocktail while watching a show? Do you notice it while laying out at the pool? Of course not! So why does anyone care? If you seriously let it bother you, you have bigger issues than this!

It appears that some people wouldn't even book a ship that has such a design painted on it. LOL :D

They're very self conscious about what others would think about their choice I guess.

There have been several changes and fixes on the Royal class ships since 2013 that you seemed to base your rant on.....PCL seems to be doing quite well because their ships are full, there are at least 3 more Royal class ships coming, and prices are definitely up to sail on their ships....

I also like it. Princess is my cruise line of choice, but to be honest I think HAL has prettier ships. They look like ships and not great big shoe boxes. The blue Sea-Witch dresses it up a bit, softens the lines. Just my opinion and not even worth 2 cents.

Certainly worth 2 cents Canadian :D.

I haven't sailed either line yet, though I'm going on the Regal next December. I've looked at many tours of the Regal and a few of the newer HAL ships, and can't for the life of me how the HAL ships are prettier. Of course, I'm partial to larger ships, which leave HAL way behind, though I realize that HAL lovers like it that way. I've been on the Oasis, which I loved, and am booked on the Regal, Seaside, Symphony, and the equinox for the future. Everybody likes something different. If you like HAL's ships, good for you. To each his own.

broberts: good one, thanks for the laugh.

deliver42: yep, opinions are like certain body parts. Everyone has one. The biggest ship I've been on was the Royal Princess. I thought it was too much like a floating hotel. Give me smaller ships that feel like ships. Anyway, have fun on the Regal. She's a sister to the Royal, I think. Definitely shiny and pretty. Just not for me.
