Mariner Credits for On-Board Spending

I know that bonus credits are given at the rate of one credit for every $300 of spending (both on-board and in pre-ordered excursions/extras) on the combined folio charges of your party...its a nice way to get to a higher mariner level a little quicker.

That being said, I was pleasantly surprised to see the number of bonus credits we got after our Zuiderdam cruise last month...10 bonus credits....which implies that $3000 was spent both on-board and in prior purchases.

I was a bit taken aback by that...because there's no way we spent $3000. Not even close.

Would they have credited us each with the total...meaning $1500 was spent beforehand and during, we each got the 'credit', so adding it together they came up with $3000? Maybe, except that I doubt we even spent $1500 before and during.

This leads me to only one conclusion...they 'counted' the value of the Signature Beverage Package, internet credit, gratuities and Pinnacle dinner from the Explore 4 as part of my spending. Except even when I add all that up...with what we spent on board at the spa and shops, it still doesn't hit $3000. Only if I add in the price we paid for the upsell do we get there.

I know they double the credit for total days on board if you are in a suite, so we got that...do they double your spending credit as well?

I'll certainly take the 10 days. It moves us much closer to three-star than I expected.

Mariner credits are based on the 'charges' that show on your statement. Apparently it doesn't matter how the 'charges' are paid. If paid by OBC, or other than your credit card, they still count towards mariner points. Remember the 'service' charges are also counted.

You each get credits.

You also get credits for the falue of any gifts you may have received. If someone sent you wine, flowers rtc, you got the dollar value in credits. I think it amazing how fast they usuallly credit them to our accounts. If we go to HAL.com, we can see them added to our accounts r rther quifdkly, it seems.

That's what I think, too. I know we get credit for advance purchases, but on our last cruise, our Mariner day credits was higher than that would account for and although we spent money onboard, we had a tiny balance at the end due to promos and OBCs.

The spending bonus and suite double days got us to 3* surprisingly quickly, and we'll hit 4*s on our next cruise.

HAL is also very generous in rounding up the on board spend ... A few years back, when we received credit for 7 days when our total spent (on board and prepaid) was only $1850 or thereabouts, I called Mariner Society (to inquire why we were credited with 7 days and not just 6 days) and was told about HAL's very generous rounding up ...

Smooth sailing $$$

Wow, I am surprised about the credit for the upsell suite. When we took an upsell offer to a suite, they were very clear that we would not get double days. Maybe they have changed that, :D. Good to know they don't deduct OBC

I've been the recipient of a generous rounding up a few times, too.

If you are already in a Signature suite (which OP was) you already get double day credit for being in a suite (hope that makes sense)!

Nice surprise for you msmayor, your stars are adding up quickly!

As canadianbear said, we were already getting double points for a suite because our original booking was a Signature Suite...the upsell was to a Neptune. I wondered if what we 'paid' for the upsell was counted as pre-cruise spending for the bonus days.

I will happily accept HAL's generosity. We've done three cruises on HAL now and between the status perks we'll get once we hit 3-star and if we continue benefit from casino rates, HAL will certainly be the 'perkier' cruise line for us.

  • 1 month later...

We booked three cabins for our family. However, we want to pay the daily service charge for all cabins and have used our credit card for two of our grandkids cabins (they are in with adult/s). Because it is on our credit card, will we get credit for mariner points since it is our credit card, or only for those listed in our cabin?

I would think the credits accrue per person in the cabin, regardless of how things are paid for. Just like you would not accrue actually days sailed if you paid for your grandchildren's cruise fare.

The best thing is to contact the Mariner Society and ask them.

Whichever "folio" the charges appear on gets the points.

  • Onboard Spending Bonus Effective with cruises on or after September 18, 2009, one bonus Cruise Day credit will be granted for each $300 in eligible onboard purchases. This is calculated on the combined folio charges for all guests on the booking, regardless of who signs each charge and who pays the bill. Only the first two guests on the booking receive the limit of one bonus day for each day sailed; 3rd and 4th guests on the same booking do not earn the onboard spending bonus.

Will we get credit for purchasing excursions?
Yes, and I think you get credit for excursions for others not in your cabin provided you charge them all to your cabin.

YES, everything on your bill, ...
From the FAQ's:

14. Are any onboard charges excluded from the onboard purchases bonus?

All casino charges, cash advances, Future Cruise deposits, and associated fees are excluded. All other onboard purchases, for example, Hotel Service Charge, Beverage Service Charge, taxes, shore excursions and all gift items purchased online or through Ship Services count towards bonus Cruise Day credits.
