Frontal outside decks

Recommended Posts

We're booked in an HAL inside fore cabin, 6th deck, just steps from doors that open to a wrap-around observation deck. I remember reading a comment that these doors are locked, unless you are in Glacier Bay, for instance. We would like to be able to make drinks, then step out there for 180+ degree views, above the crowds on the main deck.

Can anyone offer any more information? Seems the doors would remain unlocked, for fire escape?

The better place for your research would the HAL board.

In most sailing times it will be pretty windy out there. But if the bow is open, and in some other situations, those decks will be available.

That is the likely reason. A ship at cruise speed typically is moving around 20 mph or more. If it is heading into a 15 mph wind, the relative wind speed around that deck would be 35 mph - pretty strong. Most ships have glass wind screens above forward facing railings for that reason, but even still, the wind can be strong. Which is why certain locations may be closed off other than at slow speeds or low head on wind conditions.

HAL typically locks access to the bow observation areas...unless the ship is in an area where cruising speeds are very slow...and relative winds are reasonable. Glacier Bay is such an area because the ship moves at relatively slow speeds (this is required by the National Park Service which controls the bay). You will unlikely be "above the crowds: since HAL does tend to have many very experienced cruisers who know all the best viewing spots. We have nearly 500 days on HAL...which has often put us among the newbies on some HAL cruises :). If the weather is good, and the bow open...you will be able to go out there...as long as you are not using paper cups :). The Park Service puts some rangers aboard..when the ship enters Glacier Bay...and one of their goals is to prevent the use of any paper on open decks. They do not want any kind of trash blowing off the ship and into the bay. The last time we were in Glacier Bay it was really cold, and the cruise line was serving hot chocolate, coffee and tea...but only in China cups....and with cloth napkins.
