Wild price increase!

Thank you for the information. What if you upgrade (outside the bidding process)? Do you cancel and rebook the higher room and lose your promos? Or do they just take the difference, if any, and you keep what you had?

Maybe with the bidding system in place, they feel they don't need to lower prices that much?

Correct. NCL would try to upsell as much as possible to passengers who have booked a lower category cabin.

I personally never book a cruise unless I am happy with the price. If the price drops prior to final payment... thats great, I take advantage of it. If it goes up, I couldn't care less. I am locked in. I try not to busy myself with what others pay, it will only get me thinking I should have worked harder for a better price. I shouldn't feel that way though, because if I booked, I was willing to pay the price.

That said... I never book with the expectation the price will drop before final payment. Prices have increased quite often though.
