Zipline is a blast.

Also booked a whale watching tour directly with Glacier Wind Charters. Shawn and Teresa are great people. Going with them again in August.

I won't do large boat whale watching anymore due to inability to get pictures due to the hordes.

Icy Strait is my favorite stop on Alaska cruises, mostly because it's unique in its lack of commercialization.

We did a bear walk in midJune several years ago.

Walked through a meadow on a boardwalk to an overlook at the river. Saw a sow and two cubs. We were escorted by a tour guide and two bear guides with guns.

Don't know if it's still the case, but we found souvenirs to be cheaper here than in other ports.

Icy Strait Point was my favorite port from our 14 day cruise on the NCL Sun last month. I think I felt that way because of the combination of beautiful weather and because we had such a great time on our whale watching tour with Glacier Wind. (And it helped that the whales were really showing off that day!) After our tour, the whales continued to bubble net feed right next to the ship all afternoon!

Even if you don't book a tour, you can have a nice, relaxing day at Icy Strait Point. There is a wooden walkway that leads to an old cannery that has been converted into a museum/gift shop that is interesting. We also enjoyed walking through the woods right next to the beach. A beautiful trail with lots of eagles in the trees. I even got a photo of one holding onto a fish he had just caught.

We just went ashore and walked around . Icy Point was built as port where there isn't anything (except zip-line) without a ships excursion.

Can you do the zipline on your own or must you sign up for an excursion to do it?

I highly recommend a whale watching cruise with Glacier Wind. Small boat with only 6 passengers. Heated cabin with a bathroom on board and plenty of space outside for everyone.

The trails near the pier are great as well. This was our favorite stop since it was about the wildlife and nature.

How much time to allow for the walk that leads to the river or the walk to the beach? I am booked with Glacier Wind for whalewatching and then I have around one and a half hours spare before I need board the ship.

I second exactly what quack2 said! We went to ISP last August and absolutely loved this port. We went out with Shawn on Glacier Wind Charters and then did the zip line through princess. Shawn and Teresa were wonderful...even got a Christmas card from them! And the zip line is exhilarating! We booked an alaska cruise for next summer and specifically picked the one that goes to ISP. The local community has done a beautiful job with the cruise port and history center. It's a very relaxing and beautiful port!

If you are referring to the nature trails and walk behind the pier complex / building, you don't need much time. You should be fine. We also did a private whale watching trip then came back to ISP and explored the area.

The nature trail we took was not long but very beautiful. Huge trees, and the trail took you to the rocky beach right next to the ship. We were never far from the ship, so I doubt you will have any problems with time.

You could do a Bear Watch with Brown Bear Lodge like we did the end of May this year.

Guess it would have been good huh if I would have included of one of the Bears we saw huh?

ISP is one of my favorite ports in the US. We've done 9 cruises altogether so far, 1 RT from Seattle which got us hooked on Alaska, and 4 back-to-backs from Vancouver. I haven't done the land portion pre- or post- cruise because of very limited mobility issues. I go where I can take my scooter.

We've done whale watches there, and one of the biggest thrills was being surrounded by a pod of Humpbacks, with one going beneath our boat and emerging right under my feet. I looked right down its blow hole! :D I was so amazed I just watched, and didn't get a photo! It's a place where one can see bubble net fishing up close from the ship and the breaching, fin slapping, and tail lobbing. One of our excursion captains dropped down an aquatic microphone and we heard Humpbacks "singing". Eagles abound in the area, and bears are easily seen. Our first time on bear watches my son and I together had 30 separate sightings. Alaska's Wildest Kitchen has been an excursion we've enjoyed a couple of times, each time it was a little different. I highly recommend the port whether one does an excursion or just walks around. Chat with the folks there and you will have made a friend!
