Allure Freestyle Dining Attire...

Hello - I'm sorry, I'm sure this has been asked before but I haven't been able to find a definitive answer. We are sailing this coming weekend.

We are new to Royal Caribbean but have been on several other lines and we have not had to dress up for dinners. We have opted for the freestyle dining and are wondering about the attire for that dining room. My husband wears suits and smart casual every day and just wants to wear nice shorts and collared/button down shirts for dinner. Will this be okay? Is the attire for freestyle any different than reserved dining? And, if there is a preferred attire will they not allow you in if not wearing it?

The women in our group will probably wear sundresses or cute shorts rompers...is that okay?

Thank you!

Thank you Clarea. Will we be "frowned upon" or are more and more people not dressing up? We will still look nice, just not formal.

There are always those who frown on others. Can't stop 'em. But you are extremely unlikely to be turned away.

The cruise line suggested dress code says not shorts allowed in the MDR. Whether that is enforced, depends on the ship, the phases of the moon and the attitude of the person seating you.

We just sailed Allure in May and had MTD, we saw shorts every night in the MDR, with the exception of the formal nights.

Just an FYI you will see all sorts of dress in the mtd. I feel shorts in evening dining not the most appropriate. Windjammer seems to be a venue for that. That being said, you will see almost every level and style of dress now in the regular evening dining rooms. I think RCCL has given up and has pretty much let things go except for some attire that goes too far out[emoji12][emoji12][emoji12][emoji33][emoji33][emoji33][emoji33][emoji33]

Thank you all. Is there a way I can find out ahead of time which nights are the "formal" nights...we may already have other things planned on those nights and it won't even matter.

We cruised on the Allure last month.

It was the most 'casual' attired ship we have ever been on.

We dressed on formal night as directed and could count on barely two hands how many people were in tuxes and dresses. We changed right after dinner as we felt very overdressed.

On other nights I usually wore smart trousers and nice top and husband wore trousers and a shirt.

We were very smart compared to most.

Shorts everywhere seemed to be the norm at all locations and meal times.

Id say on most RCI sailings most people follow the suggested attire or at least close to it.

I would say you aren't sailing on any of the cruises that I have been on in the last few years. The no shorts in the dining room sign outside the MDR might as well be written in invisible ink. I actually don't think there was a sign on Allure in May even though the suggested attire says no shorts.

Here is what is posted on the RCCL website. It is up to you if you want to follow or ignore their suggested policy.

Yes, you will probably see shorts in the dining room for dinner. On the other hand you may be denied entry.

It's your vacation, do what you feel comfortable doing.

Q: What are the dress codes onboard?s.gifA: When you’re onboard, the right look will vary by venue. But here are a few types of suggested attire you’ll see, grouped by item.

  • Casual: You’re on vacation – relax! Jeans, polos, sundresses and blouses are all the right amount of laid back. Please keep swimwear to the Pool Deck. Shorts are welcomed for breakfast and lunch.
Smart Casual: Think of this as a step up from your typical dinner wear. Dress to impress with collared shirts, dresses, skirts and blouses, or pantsuits. Jackets, sports coats and blazers are snazzy and welcomed.

  • Formal: Make it a night out in your best black-tie look – suits and ties, tuxedos, cocktail dresses or evening gowns. There can be 1-3 formal nights during a sailing and is at the ship’s discretion.

The first one will be Night #2 and the second one will be either #5 or #6, depending on your itinerary.

Long pants, collared shirt for men (polo or golf shirt is more than fine)....pretty much anything for women. Shorts are sort of "frowned upon" at dinner...but some will wear them anyway. Shorts/tees/flip flops are fine at breakfast and lunch in the dining room.

RCI doesn't have "freestyle"...they have "anytime".
