Some advise

Recommended Posts

We have a rental car from Sydney and will be heading to the Blue Mountains. Are there any things we should stop to see in route to the Mountains? We want to go to Featherdale park, Echo Point, Scenic World, Wentworth Falls and the Jenolan caves. We will be there for 2 days and 2 overnights. Is there anything else we should add and in what order would we be doing these things?

Make a stop at the grand old Hydro Majestic Hotel in Meadlow Bath. They have a full afternoon tea service but whether you eat or just have a cup of coffee the views over the valley are some of the best in the Blue Mountains. Pop into the Mt Victoria Hotel for a beer or stay the night there or in one of the restored guesthouses at Mt Victoria or Blackheath. Caves House at Jenolan Caves is also an historic guesthouse. Depending on the time of year you'll be welcomed by raging log fires and warm mountain hospitality.

If time allows take the walk out to the Three Sisters at Echo Point and I'm sure you're aware of the Scenic Railway and the Cable Car reached from the opposite side of the valley.

That is a bit of a drive to get to Jenolan caves but there is also the Zig Zag railway, Wineries at Mudgee, Lithgow is also an historic town.

The Zig Zag Railway at Clarence (Lithgow) is scheduled to reopen later this year after major bushfire damage a few years ago. There hasn't been an announcement yet so if this interests you double check their website.

You asked about suggested order - Stop at Featherdale on the way up - you don't want to run out of time if seeing the wildlife is important for you. If you're on a cruise that stops in Melbourne or Brisbane you might want to do your wildlife visit in one of those ports instead.

Just read on another thread that you're staying at the Three Sisters Motel. If that's for two nights it will dictate what you do sort of. You'll need to devote a ful day to the day trip to Jenolan Caves and at least half a day for Echo Pt/Scenic World. Late lunch at Leura on the way back to Sydney would be nice.

Nope. The only things between Sydney city and the Blue Mountains are endless depressing suburbs.

Applies to a lot of cities - once you leave scenic/tourist sites downtown there is often not much to see in-transit to some other places to see :)

Some good advice given by some others on here with some of the places I was thinking off being suggested.

OzKiwiJJ's suggestion to see Leura is a good one. Just take the Leura exit off the Highway & take a look in Leura & then just continue on to Katoomba. One place we like in Leura is a Antiques/Teahouse combo called Bygone Beautys. There's also a nice restaurant in Leura with view over the valley called Solitary.

Any advice I had to give is well covered by 'wishfulone', so you can't go wrong with that advice.

Enjoy - give us a wave as you pass thru Penrith on the M4 - it is just before you go over the Nepean River at the foot of the mountains :)
