Inquiring about Mediterranean info. Specifically ports and/or itinerary. Other general advice. Historically go Caribbean during the summer. Looking towards Italy emphasis. Any other good European routes? About two weeks total from NYC. Looking forward to replies.

First, you have to decide WHERE you want to go. And WHAT you want to see. The Med. is not about beaches, it is culture, history, ruins, churches. And food. The Med. is usually divided into Eastern and Western for cruising. Departure ports for Western are Barcelona and Civitavecchia (Rome). Eastern departures may be from Civitavecchia, Venice, or Piraeus. These are generalizations. Go to http://www.cruisetimetables.com and choose ports you would like to visit from the Ports of Call list. See who calls there and their itineraries. An eastern or western itinerary may be 7-12 days. To do both requires at least 14 days for the cruise only, plus travel time on each end. It is strongly suggested you fly in to your departure city a day early, so factor that into time and cost. Get a copy of Rick Steves' Mediterranean Cruise Ports and read about the ports on your list, and decide from there what you want to do. Do not stress over ship or cruise line. Med. cruises are very port intensive so all the bells and whistles on the ship are less important, as is the newness of the ship. EM

Are you looking for sailing from NYC? There are Transatlantic sailing from NYC to Europe in April. If not, you can check the Med cruise for Greece and Italy port on its 14day Adriatic & Aegean Medley from Rome to Barcelona.

I also suggest considering Northern Europe for the Scandinavia/Baltic Cruise that includes St. Petersburg, Russia. Great ports too.
