beachnative Posted September 4, 2017 #151 Share Posted September 4, 2017 Decidiing what to do as a hurricane approaches is always difficult. We were vacationing in St.Martin one August and the resort notified us that two hurricanes were tracking toward the island. They suggested two options: evacuate (if the hurricane hit it would be more than a week before the airport would reopen) or stay and take our chances (but the employees of the resort would not be working). We decided to stay. 24 hours later the hurricanes turned and missed the island and we continued our wonderful vacation. Looking back at that decision I think we were crazy!!!:o
Milwaukee Eight Posted September 4, 2017 #152 Share Posted September 4, 2017 They can't, they just wouldn't admit it until people had already gotten themselves stranded in Houston trying to get to a port that had been closed for a couple of days, at RC's insistence they would sail as planned. (I'm supposed to sail RC out of Orlando on the 17th AND Irma is currently aimed at my state for around the time I would be leaving town for the trip, so I'm a little anxious. And yes, I have trip insurance.) Orlando is land locked. Port Canaveral is where the cruise ships dock. Rare mandyleighflies Posted September 4, 2017 #153 Share Posted September 4, 2017 We are on the 9/15 sailing of Majesty OTS, I'm watching Irma to see if our ship will be delayed out of PC. Fingers crossed she dissipates at some point soon. Good luck to all the cruisers heading out over the week and weekend, we will all be watching the storm and sending positive cruise vibes your way!! If we do get to go to the Bahamas and if the hurricane does do damage, are we allowed to bring anything with us to donate to the port? Bottles of water or clothing? Seems like a thing we could easily do, if allowed, as we would be the next large group of people to that area if the storm passes through.

gobucks66 Posted September 4, 2017 #156 Share Posted September 4, 2017 The latest models have me depressed. We go out on 9/11 from Miami and it looks like the previous cruise will be held at sea or if they do, we won't get out.

CruisinCons Posted September 4, 2017 #158 Share Posted September 4, 2017 Hmmm...looks like I will be able to get into Orlando fine on the 9th. Where we go from there will be a mystery. Hotel in Cocoa Beach for the 9th, supposed to sail on Oasis the 10th. If my sailing gets canceled, I can always rent a car and drive to the west coast and stay at my in-laws place in Punta Gorda, or hope to get something in Orlando, I guess. Ugh. luurtsema001 Posted September 4, 2017 #162 Share Posted September 4, 2017 (edited) So after 10+ Cruises and Stalking this site I am motivated to make a post ;-) This is a great resource to learn everything there is to know! We flying into Miami on 9/8 going out on the Norwegian "Booze Cruise" Sky for our 10 year Anniversary. It's a short 3 day affair. The itinerary is pretty much in ground zero of the current path of Irma (Nassau, Great Stirrup Cay). At this point we are just waiting and seeing what happens. I hope Norwegian is responsible and considers all the factors. IE, Impact of Embarkation Port, can people get home if Miami is impacted, etc, etc. What I have done to sort of prepare is book a Hotel Stay inland in preparation we might be stuck for a while. However if Irma slams Florida I think we are going to stay home and forgo the flight, etc. The bottom line is folks, this is what life hands us and you have to be willing to take a loss without insurance and plan accordingly. I see a lot of frustration here and can relate but what control do we have in the end? Hope everyones' trip pans out ok! Janeyjr Posted September 4, 2017 #163 Share Posted September 4, 2017 We are planning to be on carnival vista 9/9, flying into Miami that morning. How soon would I know if cruise is cancelled or changed? This is my 4th cruise but never encountered this. I'm fine with changing itinerary but the flight and missing ship worries me 😬
mydogs Posted September 4, 2017 #164 Share Posted September 4, 2017 Oasis 9/10. Not looking great . Wonder if RCI will cancel. Trying to decide if we should prep the house for Irma or wait a few days.
Grandmimie Posted September 4, 2017 #165 Share Posted September 4, 2017 We also sail out of Miami 9/9 on the MSC Divina getting nervous by the new models! We fly in the 9th also. Thinking about leaving early and driving but not sure if that's a safe bet. Hate to get there and the ship can't return on time or is cancelled and I'm sitting in a danger zone! I know it's a little early but need to have a game plan. There are 12 of us traveling from all different areas.[emoji30] Even if not a direct hit on Miami it's looking like it's going to be close enough to mess up flights. Buckeye State Cruisers Posted September 4, 2017 #167 Share Posted September 4, 2017 We are on Oasis Sept 10 also flying in the 9th. If you have a twitter account you can follow James Van Fleet. BNBR Posted September 4, 2017 #168 Share Posted September 4, 2017 We will ride out Irma at home, like every other hurricane. I'll have to have someone put my shutters up if it will, in fact, hit us. That's one heck of a project but oh well. South Florida isn't anywhere near as prone as New Orleans or Houston to flooding, so I'm not terribly worried. Plenty of water, fuel, generators, food, etc. etc. More of an inconvenience than anything. I hope RCI is better prepared this time around to cancel cruises out of South Florida and give travelers plenty of notice. I think around Thursday will be decision time. Let's see. bashleyf Posted September 4, 2017 #170 Share Posted September 4, 2017 We're supposed to be on the Oasis on 9/10, just like so many of you on this board. I definitely don't like the updated models showing it hitting south FL. We live in Tampa, so our primary concern is leaving our two dogs here while we go on the cruise. We have a trusted pet sitter who will be staying with our dogs, but we would not have any fun on the cruise if we are worrying that Irma might hit Tampa. I feel bad for those who are supposed to be flying in from out of state. If the cruise is cancelled at the last minute we just turn around and drive the 2 hours home, but those flying in would be stuck in FL, possibly without a place to stay. I know we'll find out more info in the coming days. Hopefully the cruise lines will announce things in advance so we can all change our plans if necessary. Everyone stay safe. Tampa could still get a direct hit. Nothing is out of the cone at the moment. If it stays south and moves a bit further west it could curve up right into Tampa. At the moment, just too hard to predict anything. Just be prepared for the worst, I guess.
