Hurricane damage?

Perspective. Even in Florida it may take weeks to get all power up. In Puerto Rico the estimate is six months. And there is another hurricane out there. Time will tell. Keith

Appreciate these updates, details and follow-ups from Keith and others. Fortunately, we do not have any upcoming Caribbean cruises, but am following with interest these challenges in getting ALL of these aspects of recovery to happen. It will take time, both in Florida, plus at many of these various Caribbean island locations. San Juan was luck not have received a direct hit. Damages there, but it could have been much worse in PR.

THANKS! Enjoy! Terry in Ohio

Panama Canal? Due to cancelled flights we have been stuck in San Juan since our ship docked on Saturday. Earliest flight we could get out is Wednesday. Puerto Ricans have been incredibly resilient during this time and have been very gracious. Our hotel, the Doubletree, has had full power for our entire stay. We've enjoyed the restaurants, beaches, malls & casinos. I consider myself very lucky to have been 'stranded' here and wish only the best to everyone on this island and the rest of the areas affected by hurricane Irma.

"Lucky to be stranded here" - You should copy write that! "Irma Lucky to be Stranded in Puerto Rico!"

Thank you for your post and sharing your first hand experience.

Puerto Rico should be getting recovery help, just like Florida. Both are part of the US.

I look forward to spending three days in San Juan before my cruise in March.

Appreciate your posts too, Aviator fo the Sea on this thread.

Sounds like you were very fortunate to be in a hotel with power.

Anyone know of the condition of the

Courtyard by Marriott Isla Verde Beach Resort and old San Juan stores ect.?

Supposed to be there next Thursday for 2 nights pre cruise on Adventure.

I'll change flight to Friday and only stay 1 night if there is not much to do outside of the resort

Old San Juan is fine, although some businesses may lack electricity. I'll find out about your hotel.

Update 9/13/17:

  • Even if September is our slowest month, most San Juan hotels are booked solid with rescue and relief personnel from the States and Europe on their way to the Northern Leewards and with refugees being evacuated from the Virgin Islands and SXM. Double and triple check your reservations.
  • The El Yunque National Forest (the Rainforest) might not reopen for another week. The U.S National Forest Service has a huge task in clearing the roads and the hiking trails.
  • Electric power is back to over 90% of the island (but not in my neighborhood :(), and the utility says that it should be up to 99% by September 15, hopefully of this year...;p

Thank you all for your concern.

Local here!

We were spared the worst of this monster. Our thoughts and prayers are with our neighbor islands to the east. They suffered a devastating blow. But they will be back soon! After all, our greatest assets are our weather (except for hurricanes) and its peoples. Keep booking those cruises. It's the best way to help them out.

Puerto Rico specifics:

1. Most of the damage is downed trees and power lines. Very little property damage. Most hotels are operating normally with utility power or that of a backup generator.

2. The Port of San Juan is fully operational. No restrictions. This weekend's turnarounds as scheduled.

3. SJU airport also fully operational.

4. The San Juan National Historic Site (the forts) are reopening on Saturday September 9.

5. The El Yunque National Forest might reopen early next week.

6. Per the Puerto Rico Restaurants Association, most if not all of its members are in operation.

7. Old San Juan suffered no damage.

We are okay, considering what our little sisters in the Leewards went through and what Florida is facing.

Thank you,

Thank you for the update!! We became friends with the new owners of Taverna Lupula when we cruised there last July. We hope to see them again when we cruise there this March. Can you tell me if this tavern is still in business?

Hey guys, as another local I also extend my gratitude for your concerns, prayers and support. And on the same token, our thoughts and prayers are with those on our neighboring islands that got really beat up and with those in Florida as well.

Can you tell me if Taverna Lupula on San Sebastian weathered the storm OK? We love Old San Juan and this particular bar because it is the only craft beer bar we could find. We want to take them something special when we cruise back in March.

Does anyone know how the Marriott Stellaris in Condado fared in the hurricane? I'm booked to stay there for a week starting next Tuesday & a little worried about getting to the island & back from California & how everybody is doing there. Guess I'm feeling a little guilty at the thought of relaxing in a place where others might be suffering.

Relax! We're fine! By the time you come down here next week you will be hard-pressed to notice we just had a hurricane! The San Juan Marriott Resort and Stellaris Casino is fully operational. Just triple reconfirm your reservations.
