I am receiving on board credit from EX and unfortunately, they advised me that the on board credit they will give me will not be able to be used for Gratuities. This is my first time using a TA so i'm not exactly sure how true that is.

When Seattle send the amount of shipboard credit that you get from various sources, they do it in a lump sum. The Pursers office on the ship does not know who has given you what amount.

It shows up on your shipboard account as one amount. Thus it can and will be used towards your Hotel Service Charge.

Looking at my final bill for my recently completed Westerdam cruise it shows lines for Gift Orders - Preliminary Manifest which total the amount of purchased OBC, and Promo Credits totalling the sum of HAL provided OBC. This has been the case on all my cruises, at least for the past few years. So they DO know how much was provided by HAL and how much was given by Travel Agents and purchased. On my Feb cruise a supervisor had to verify that I had spent more than my HAL OBC before my refund was authorized. The HSC was paid against HAL OBC.

What is EX?

Ask them what you can use the on board credit for.

I have never heard of an OBC that can't be used for gratuities unless the gratuities are already included in the promotion.

Explore4 maybe? Grautities are not included in Explore4 this year.

I think EX is Expedia Cruise Ship Centers.

This is correct. I disguised the TA name as were not allowed to disclose.

this is their terms and conditions:

All other maximum credit amounts are associated with the respective Cabin Price. Onboard Credit is in U.S. dollars. Onboard credit is valid per cabin, not per person. Booking must be fully-paid at least twenty-one (21) days prior to date of sailing in order to qualify for the onboard credit. A redemption form must be completed by the guest, and submitted online at least 21 days prior to sailing in order to receive the onboard credit. Once the redemption form has been submitted, your booking will be reviewed and, if eligible, the onboard credit will be applied to the booking within 2-3 weeks prior to your sailing departure date. Only one redemption form per booking may be submitted. Onboard credit offer is capacity controlled and may be modified, or withdrawn, without prior notice. Cruise booking deposit must be paid by March 31, 2017 in order to be eligible for the onboard credit offer. Onboard credit will appear in a passenger's onboard account on the day of embarkation. Not valid for cancelled or rebooked cruises. Onboard credit has no cash value for any unused portions and is nontransferable. The onboard credit may not be used in the casino or towards gratuities. Please consult cruise line for further information. Additional cruise line restrictions may apply. Offer is combinable with all other promotions. Offer is not available on Avalon, or Uniworld bookings.

Thanks. Sorry I guessed incorrectly earlier :o

As far as the OBC goes, HAL will credit it to your onboard account and the charges just get applied. I don't think HAL's system is sophisiticated enough yet to differentiate.

OBC I get from various sources is not to be used in the casino but nothing/no one stops me from charging in the casino ;)

I suspect you will not have an issue unless there is a sudden, massive change.

  • 1 month later...

I recently transferred a booking from HAL to a big box TA and received shipboard credit from the TA.

This the first time I have done this and am wondering how I can tell if HAL acknowledges / is aware of the OBC received form my TA. The credit shows on my booking invoice from my TA of course, but is there a way to verify with HAL that yes, they have it? It doesn't appear anywhere in my reservation on HAL's site (my online account).

Should I call them, or simply wait until I print out my Express Docs (and will it even show on them)? Just curious as to where I'll see that I do in fact have the OBC prior to boarding.

Thanks!

OBC from your TA does not show up anywhere that I have ever seen - including your express docs.

I just bring my TA's confirmation with me and check my account when I get on board.

All my TA OBC's have always been there ;)

You should print out your invoice from the TA and take it with you. Chances are it won't show up anywhere on the HAL site, if it does, it would be on your itinerary on the first day showing as a gift. Most likely the TA won't even purchase the OBC until just before your cruise, maybe a week or so.

In reading this topic, it struck me that we may not be discussing exactly the same thing. People are saying that HAL says that you cannot use their OBC as gratuities - "The onboard credit may not be used in the casino or towards gratuities."

Now, this may be correct, but the hotel service charge may or may not be "gratuities". By gratuities I would think means tips you give to the crew directly.

Just a thought.

When we have received an OBC, it has been applied to our on board ship account, which reduced any charges to our account, whether they were the HSC or any other purchase charged to the account. We have not had a problem.

This is one of the most confusing threads, starting with the OP's less than clear question. What is meant by gratuities? By "EX?" (turns out it is a TA); now, where did the quote come from? On the HAL website, I presume, but where? And to further confuse the issue, HAL refers to "Pre-Paid Hotel Gratuties", in referring to early booking benefits. But . . . as everyone has commented, all the OBC's, from any source, go into one basket and are used as credits against your account. So . . . has anything been accomplished here? Other than to tell the OP that their TA is probably giving them bad advice.
