hummingbird63 Posted December 17, 2017 #1 Share Posted December 17, 2017 My husband and I have reservations to the steakhouse the 1st night of our cruise on the Vista I February, and we're told by a friend that we would receive a free bottle of wine in the steakhouse that night. Is this true, and if it is, do they give you a choice of wines? Sent from my iPad using Forums
bury me at sea Posted December 17, 2017 #2 Share Posted December 17, 2017 You may choose between red and white, fairly inexpensive brand. The better deal for me is you can order any bottle of wine on the wine list at half price. Happy sailing.
Geargoesdown Posted December 17, 2017 #3 Share Posted December 17, 2017 When we were on the Dream they gave us the free bottle and we also purchased a bottle for 50% off. They said we could buy as many as we wanted with the 50% off.
Geargoesdown Posted December 17, 2017 #4 Share Posted December 17, 2017 Oh, and you don’t have to open them! You can take it with you and save for later.
Barsnikel Posted December 17, 2017 #5 Share Posted December 17, 2017 we get the free bottle of wine with the meal, then order 2 additional bottles at 50% off. We have them open the bottles and re-cork them. We then take them back to our cabin to enjoy later in the cruise
WLHyatt Posted December 17, 2017 #6 Share Posted December 17, 2017 The wine that is free is mediocre at best, use the 50% off and get something better.
Moviela Posted December 17, 2017 #7 Share Posted December 17, 2017 Carnival gives a "free" bottle that retails for $7. It is not mediocre, but a good value for the money. If you buy a $60 bottle at half price, you are paying $30 for a wine that retails for $12. Keep in mind that Carnival pays far less than retail, and has no alcohol taxes to pay. If you are satisfied with the quality of the half price wine, it is a good deal. The Steakhouse services an exceptional meal. I like to have an exceptional wine to go with that. I bring my own. Costco has a couple dozen fine wines in the $20 to $30 range that are as good or better than any on the ship. A few Costco stores sell Cameron Hughes wines. These are exceptional wines priced in that range that retail for $100 to $200. Hughes buys excess inventory in the barrel from the high end wineries on condition he not reveal who produced it. Hughes is also online and sells direct to consumers. For $15 corkage the Steakhouse will decant and serve your bottle. You can save the corkage if you pour it into a glass in you room and allow it to breathe. Then take the glass with you to eat.
hummingbird63 Posted December 18, 2017 Author #8 Share Posted December 18, 2017 Thank you everyone, I think we'll definitely select a bottle at half price.

You can also bring an open bottle to the Steakhouse or MDR and not have a corkage fee.
Geargoesdown Posted December 18, 2017 #10 Share Posted December 18, 2017 Well, we got the free bottle (I’m a snob and thought was good) AND got to buy as many as we wanted for the 50% off. We bought just one bottle for the 50% off and had that at the steak house. And we took the free bottle with us and saved for later. Actually we didn’t have it until the last day of the cruise. This was on the Dream. So what I’m trying to say is, you can have both offers if you so choose.
WaggesAZ Posted December 18, 2017 #11 Share Posted December 18, 2017 Do they offer any bubbly at 50% off or just wines?
momonthego17 Posted December 18, 2017 #12 Share Posted December 18, 2017 I read that someone bought Dom at half price. I think you can get anything on their list at half price. We bought six bottles at 50% off and had them in throughout our cruise. Sent from my iPad using Forums

Rare chrismch Posted December 18, 2017 #16 Share Posted December 18, 2017 Just looked up that wine online and Total Wine sells it for $75, so getting half-price on the ship is a real value!

Djptcp Posted December 19, 2017 #20 Share Posted December 19, 2017 We are picky about red wines and have never been disappointed with the selection of free red wines in the Steakhouse on the first night. On one cruise we even received a free bottle of wine on not only the first night but the second night. Nice surprise.
