Sergio11 Posted January 23, 2018 #1 Share Posted January 23, 2018 I booked an 8:55 AM flight from Fort Lauderdale after we will be disembarking from the Allure in August. Any pros or cons and tips on getting off the ship fast and making this flight? Thanks Sent from my iPad using Forums
Clarea Posted January 23, 2018 #2 Share Posted January 23, 2018 That would be a little tight for my stress level. If there are no delays, and you are in the self-assist line by 5am, you can probably made it to the airport before 7am. Still, not much time for any delay. Rare BillOh Posted January 23, 2018 #4 Share Posted January 23, 2018 Yikes! I would spend my whole, very costly vacation worrying. Me too, but I'll admit I've lost touch with airline rules and regulations. What will be the cost in $ and time if you miss the flight? (directed to the OP) I use to fly a lot in the golden age for passengers, pre-9/11 and pre-deregulation. Back in those days if you missed your TWA flight, you would walk over to United or American and they would honor your ticket no problem. .

beagledude Posted January 23, 2018 #6 Share Posted January 23, 2018 We recently made a 9:15 out of FLL. Four of us were in Star Class so left our room via escort with a bunch of luggage about 7:30am. Had priority check-in and TSA precheck so were at the gate no later than 8:15am with plenty of time. Can't tell you how much time those three things combined saved but I'm guessing quite a bit. Regular TSA lines didn't seem too bad but you never know so having TSA precheck would be advisable at a minimum. Depending on how early you get off you could easily make it EXCEPT if the ship is late or customs delays. No way to predict that.
Spunky946 Posted January 23, 2018 #7 Share Posted January 23, 2018 No something I would ever book. I can’t imagine spending a vacation worrying if I would make the flight and what would happen if I missed it. Plus rushing of the ship. I’d book a later flight. katiel53 Posted January 23, 2018 #8 Share Posted January 23, 2018 Last Sunday I was off the Allure by 6:50 and at the airport about 7:15. I did self assist and had the mobile passport app on my phone. There were several agents available in the port and we were directed to the mobile passport line, but for some reason the app wasn't working. I've heard this has been happening the last several cruises. I do have a known traveler number, so that made me eligible for pre check. The lines weren't long for pre check and I was at the gate within 20 minutes of arriving at the airport. I flew on Southwest and used the outside check in for my luggage. Having said all the above, I'd have made a flight at 8:55, but I wouldn't ever schedule a flight that early as I would be a nervous wreck. Royal Caribbean recommends flights from FLL be 11:30 or later. Mine was 10:30 and I felt from previous cruises on Allure, that I would not have a problem making that flight. I'm not OP, and I'm not a cruise expert, but I am an air travel expert (at least, I consider myself one as I travel for a living)...if you miss your flight, odds are you would have to buy a last-minute walk-up fare. Now, some airlines (or, rather, some agents) might be nice, cut you a break, and put you on standby, but I certainly wouldn't count on it...and in fact, I would count against it, especially without any kind of (a) airline/alliance status, or (b) full fare ticket, which few people (especially leisure travelers) purchase. ptf2009 Posted January 23, 2018 #11 Share Posted January 23, 2018 We fly @9:30 on SW and have had no problem. We self disembark around 7:20am and arrive at FLL by 8:00am. With TSA we are at our gate in plenty of time:) Hope this helps! I don’t worry for a second. Have a wonderful cruise!
tikruizer Posted January 24, 2018 #12 Share Posted January 24, 2018 Which airline ? We once checked in the last night of the cruise, printed boarding passes, dropped bags and payed $10 pp on Jetblue to use the express TSA security line. We were having breakfast at the airport well before 8:00 am.

We always self disembark because we only have 2 carryons each (yes, even with “dressy” clothes). What time did you disembark? Hopefully not 5:30 as others have suggested. tikruizer Posted January 24, 2018 #16 Share Posted January 24, 2018 What time did you self disembark? And how long did it take you to get through customs?...just wondering We were standing waiting for ship to allow disembarkation to proceed, did the self-disembarkation thing carrying our own luggage. We were among the first 50 off the ship. Even being non US citizens, costums was pretty quick.
travelfreak Posted January 25, 2018 #17 Share Posted January 25, 2018 Here’s what we did. Booked a 9:30 am flight AND a later one. It was a SW so no problem canceling g and banking it for a later date. (We fly often to see grandkids, so no chance we wouldn’t need it!) we walked off, got through customs, and grabbed a cab and were at our gate 7:45!!! pink845 Posted January 26, 2018 #18 Share Posted January 26, 2018 I am confused. Why spend all that money on a lovely cruise only to stress out at the last moment of your vacation. If there is an emergency on board or a delay at customs, or weather issues, (it is August 2018 correct your cruise - well that is hurricane season!!!!), why would you book such as early flight. I know early flights are cheaper but so are later ones, like 7 or 8 pm. If money is the issue, book later for the same cheap price as an early flight, rent a car, go shopping and then make the later flight. That is what we do. I cruise five to six times per year. I would never book something so very early. All the posters who are boasting of making their 9 am flights are doing you a true disservice by saying, we did it and we were fine. But as they say live and learn.

waterbug123 Posted January 26, 2018 #21 Share Posted January 26, 2018 Back in those days if you missed your TWA flight, you would walk over to United or American and they would honor your ticket no problem. . Depends on the airline Bill. Can't do that with Southwest and other "low cost" carriers. Not so bad with Southwest because they typically have many other options, but with some airline like Spirit, options might be limited. Other airlines besides Southwest have options too. If you're flying from FLL on Delta for example, there's a good chance you're connecting at ATL. Miss your initial flight? Delta has over a dozen daily flights FLL-ATL, plus numerous other flights to other connecting cities (ex. NY, Detroit) and similarly has many flights FROM these connecting cities to many of their destinations. Result: Lots of potential rebooking options! As for walking over to another airline and having the honor your ticket, it isn't just low cost carriers that won't allow that. First of all, even if your ticket can be endorsed over to another airline, it's never about the passenger just walking over to another desk and saying "hey I missed my flight on XYZ airline, can you put me on one of yours for free, here's my ticket." The process has to be initiated by the airline, and agreements to do this have been reduced in recent years. Delta no longer has an agreement with AA for example, the way they used to. They recently announced they have a renewed agreement with them, but I believe it is for severe weather situations only, NOT cases of the passenger simply missing a flight. (don't know that it ever included those situations, lol)
Clarea Posted January 26, 2018 #22 Share Posted January 26, 2018 Other airlines besides Southwest have options too. ... True, that's why I said "and other low cost carriers". American, Delta, and United will have options.
LuCruise Posted January 26, 2018 #23 Share Posted January 26, 2018 I just checked my report to see when we disembarked from Allure. We walked off the cruise (carrying our own luggage) at 7am, got in a taxi at 7:30am and at the airport by 7:45am. Our flight wasn't until 11:40am so we had lots of time. Dixie1337 Posted January 26, 2018 #24 Share Posted January 26, 2018 Can I piggy back on this thread to ask: if I have an 11:50 international flight do I need to do self disembarkation from the allure? I don't really want to stand in line. I've got TSA pre check and NEXUS/Global Entry.
