beerman2 Posted February 15, 2018 #201 Share Posted February 15, 2018 This reminded me of something I saw on my last cruise, which was the Vista. This guy wore a T-shirt in the pool area that had "I pee in pools" on the front. Thankfully, that's the only odd T-shirt I saw on that cruise. Sometimes I wonder what people are thinking when they purchase shirts like that. Answer: They aren't thinking😂😂

DebJ14 Posted February 15, 2018 #203 Share Posted February 15, 2018 We have had this discussion on multiple ships with various Maitre D's. They said if they see a tank top and shorts, they will try to intercept him before he gets to his table and ask him to change or eat on the Lido. But, one Maitre D said they are coming in on the upper level of the MDR and then using the stairs to come in behind him. He can't be everywhere. Another one told us it is a losing battle because so many people refuse to follow any of the rules and he said the caliber of guests had declined to the point where many of them had no idea about basic dress codes or manners. On our cruise last April the Maitre D kicked a group of young men out of the Lido restaurant at dinner because they were in bare feet and had no shirts on. They cursed him out, but Security was nearby and stepped up and escorted them out. On our cruise this January the Asst. Housekeeping Manager asked a woman to take her baby in a diaper out of the aft pool. She resisted, called him a few choice names and he told her if she did not cooperate he would call Security and have her forcibly removed. She only moved as the Security guard approached. They are trying, but as one officer told me, it is a matter of personal safety for the crew and there have been many incidents where guests got beligerent when advised they were breaking the rules. Sadly, we have seen it. I spent a week in January at a resort in Cozumel that is billed as 4 star, but is really more 3 star. However, if you want to eat in one of the a la carte restaurants you do have to abide by the dress code which requires closed toed shoes for men, something dressier than flip flops for women in the footwear department and does not allow shorts for either men or women. They absolutely enforced the dress code at all 3 of the a la carte restaurants every night. All the whining in the world did not get them admitted. Also, 2 of the 3 a la carte restaurants did not permit children and we saw lots of people mouthing off in front of their young children. I must say it was refreshing to dine without whiny children and with other guests who were actually quite well dressed. It is all over the hotel website, tour operators websites and Trip Advisor forums, so not knowing is not an excuse. It was fun watching these big men try to intimidate the smaller women hostesses and get nowhere. If the cruise line really wanted to enforce the rules across the fleet, they could do so. But, apparently they have decided not to as evidenced by the responses from JH. They just need to dump the dress code if they are not going to uniformly enforce it. However, casual and comfortable does not need to be sloppy.

Rare BlerkOne Posted February 15, 2018 #206 Share Posted February 15, 2018 How you look is completely irrelevant. How much your clothes cost is completely irrelevant. The quality of your clothes is completely irrelevant. Your perception of superiority is completely irrelevant. Essentially, your entire argument is completely irrelevant. You can walk into the MDR on elegant night wearing diamond studded jeans sewn with gold thread and they would still be completely inappropriate. Conversely, if you wore $2 thrift store khakis made 40 years ago with Walmart button down you'd be wearing a completely appropriate outfit for the ocassion. That is your opinion. An army of one. bigbadandugly Posted February 15, 2018 #207 Share Posted February 15, 2018 W... My 17 yr old son is 6’2, 215 lb, muscle bound football player... I got him an athletic cut suit that fits him perfectly in a British skinny way. Wait a minute here...you got a linebacker dressed in a "British skinny" way? Pics or it didn't happen. I deal with a number of Brits that would fit the "British skinny" fashion model and I wouldn't have them on my side in any sport involving physical contact. tradosaurus Posted February 15, 2018 #209 Share Posted February 15, 2018 That is your opinion. An army of one. Unbelievable that there are people that don't understand what appropriate attire is for an elegant meal, especially when it is spelled out specifically in the Carnival website. It boils down to respect for others and respect for oneself. I can go into most Salvation Army or Goodwill store and come out with a decent (if not very nice) coat and pants for under $30.00. My wife, son, and I were invited to a Naval Academy dinner a year ago when my son was trying to get in to the academy and I assure you that we dressed appropriately. Comparing that naval academy dinner to carnival is apples and oranges. I managed places much nicer than a carnival dining room, and we allowed jeans. Like I said most are more tasteful than a pair of dockers. What this thread really is about is how clueless some people are. Those are the ones that feel the dress code should be enforced 100 percent. It's never going to happen nor should it. Most have never worked in a fine dining setting and most have never dined in a fine dining setting either. They think their one or two cruises a year are living it up, and somehow some guy in jeans, and sitting at table without a clothe on it has ruined the whole experience. Naval Academy dinner didn't have rules and guidelines on how to dress like Carnival does. We are going on our first cruise next week so I will be able to give an informed opinion. DaCruiserFromtheATX Posted February 15, 2018 #214 Share Posted February 15, 2018 this thread is just silly. Almost as silly as the tablecloth threads. Carnival should do away with dress codes. I've been in the restaurant business for 17 years, and just the other day i had a guy all angry over two men wearing a hat into the restaurant.(semi private club restaurant bar and grille feel) as the f&b manager i told him i didn't have a problem with them wearing a hat. I agreed that i was raised differently, and wouldn't do it, but i wouldn't risk two complaints just to push his values on someone else. In the grand scheme of things that's what this boils down to. People not minding their own business. You have your views and values, and i have mind. When you let my views and values ruin your cruise or dinner, like this man did because they aren't the same of someone else's you are at fault. Mind your own business. Does a pair of shorts or a hat bother you that much. Again stay on your side of the fence and mind your business. In closing i'll be 40 years old next month. Last cruise i took i didn't pack a suit or dress pants. I gotta laugh when someone says buy a pair of dockers. I wouldn't be caught dead in such rags. My jeans you snicker at cost as much as 10 pairs of dockers at kohl's and feel about 100 times better. I already know when i take my cruise in august i won't pack a suit. Even though i have several hanging in the closet. Why? I'm with my wife and kids, and i don't feel like dressing up. It's jeans and a button down shirt every night.(ok i may take the pink dress pants;) i'm sure you would snicker at that too) when i cruise for my parents 50th in 2019, i will pack a suit, heck i might pack my tux like i did when i went on the first ever journeys cruise carnival offered. People go have a good time worry about yourselves and nobody else. You want x out of a cruise, and i want y out of a cruise. I don't let you wearing an out of date hideous jc penny's stafford suit ruin my cruise, so don't let me wearing a pair diesel jeans, with my robert graham shirt, and a pair of shoes from my collection that is worth more than all your clothes you carried on board ruin your cruise either. amen!!!! Shaded Lady Posted February 15, 2018 #216 Share Posted February 15, 2018 I do feel that men get the “shaft” when it comes to the MDR dress code. My DH has spent 32 years in the construction business. He works 50 hour weeks in heavy uncomfortable steel toe work boots that have actually changed the shape of his toes. He lives for vacations and flip flops. Maybe you can glue some rhinestones to his flipflops and he'll be okay!!! ;p I own a pair of Cole Haan shoes....does that make me "superior?" I guess I'm a plebeian because I don't even know what Cole Haan shoes or Diesel jeans are! As far as I'm concerned, if you don't smell, you're good in my book! grandmarnnurse Posted February 15, 2018 #217 Share Posted February 15, 2018 My hubby and I like a more casual way of dress when on a cruise, and totally dislike dragging his suit along. With that said, we would NEVER show up in a MDR inappropriately dressed. On formal nights, I may wear a dress (not a gown) and sandals, and he, a pair of slacks, button down shirt, and shoes. On other nights, I would wear a sundress and sandals, and he, either khaki pants or long khaki shorts with a good polo, and either shoes or good sneakers. Jeans are rightfully allowed in Golden Corral and no, GC is not nicer than a Carnival MDR :D So what are you saying, just enforce the Dress Code 95% of the time? Who are the 5% that are allowed a pass  How can you possibly know that "most" havent dined in a fine dining setting? Like i said honest, you dont disappoint....you just keep topping your previous posts by leaps and bounds :loudcry:
LostPuppy Posted February 15, 2018 #222 Share Posted February 15, 2018 My spouse & I do carry-on now, so it's a button-down shirt and tie and that's good enough for us. If I can evangelize here: Going with carry-on only luggage is the best thing we've done for our sanity and freedom on vacations. We've done B2B2Bs, followed by a week in NOLA and absolutely love it! I recommend it highly. [/evangelize]

(Before it was owned by Tillman fertitta) Del frisco's a few local places you never heard of. As for the dress code I don't know what's so hard about understanding that all rules don't have to be enforced 100% of time. It'a called managing in the gray. I do it everyday. Most great managers do it. Nobody's meal is being ruined by someone in a stylish pair of jeans on formal night, and if you're paying that much attention to somebody else you need to mind your own dang business. As for folks that have ate in a fine dining establishment. I would bet it's less than ten percent of the population. There's very few true fine dining restaurants. i always chuckled when people think one of those great steakhouses I worked in was fine dining. Honestly Carnival's mdr is closer to Golden Corral than to a fine dining restaurant. Food and service is only a few notches above that found at Golden Corral.
