Royal Caribbean credit card

Recommended Posts

I guess you don't "have" to cancel it. But I'm still not sure why someone would sign up for and keep a terrible card. It's odd behavior.

I guess not everyone figured it out as fast as you have..😉

However, if you can find a 7 night Caribbean cruise that qualifies, 125,000 points is a sweet deal

I read the details of the rewards. To qualify means it has a dollar amount restriction equal to $1250. So it's not a sweet deal at all. 125,000 in spend on a 2% card would get you 2 cruises at $1250 per cruise.... Racking up $125,000 on a royal card is leaving a lot of money on the table and kind of foolish.

I made the same mistakes early on, probably cost myself $50,000+ in lost rewards before I did more research and realized how much I was missing out on. I'm just as guilty as anyone!

We just got the Citi Double Cash card and figure we'll use what we accrue as vacation $$$. Got it this last fall and stopped using our RCI card that we'd had since 2003. We used the card to go on 5 free Caribbean cruises during the 15 years, but figured we'll actually get more bang for our buck by switching to the other card.

Yeah, you would of had 10 free cruises! Hoping to help others not make the same mistake. But think of all the free cruises you'll have over the next 15 years.

Signed up for the card during our February 2017 sailing and used it for mostly everything since with an eye toward our Allure sailing next week. Will probably discontinue using it beyond RCI purchases after this trip. As many have mentioned, the rewards simply aren't worth it compared to what's out there.

I just got an offer in the mail for the RCI card.

10,000 bonus for use in the 1st 60 days.

Also any charges or balance transfers within the first 60 days, 0% interest for 15 billing cycles.

So I could use it to pay the final payment on the next two cruises, earn a lot of OBC, and no interest.

Sam's Club Master Card has 3% cash back on travel/restaurants and 5% on gas. Citi Double Cash has 2% back on any purchase. Combined I earn over $1,000 cash back annually. Thanks, but no thanks RCI card.

We use the Sam's card. Should get our $1,700 check soon. Drawback is I have to cash it at SAM's, and since its over $1,000 we have to call ahead.

Last I looked, the cruise value was around $2,400. I may have to dbl check that. If it is a true $2,400 then the return on Royal purchases is close to 4%.

You really need to stop insulting folks on here. Some people will report you for less. 😉

(y)(y)(y) I thought for awhile that I was the only one who was exhibiting "odd behavior" by taking RCI up on their credit card offers :)

I charge everything I can on the card to build up points.

I would charge my mortgage if I was able to.

I know for many people it is a mental thing about not wanting to get a big credit card bill at the end of the month. But in my mind, If I have to pay for something anyway, why not build the points?

(Obviously as with any card with perks, it's only worth it if you pay the balance in full every month)

We have taken 4 free (except for port charges & taxes) 7 night Caribbean cruises using the points earned.

I do this same thing. Just with a much better card. The RCI credit card is very lackluster when comparing rewards programs. Look at the Capital One Venture card. You can do the same thing, you just get 2% points on every purchase, not just Royal Caribbean stuff. Also you can use it for any travel related expense and you don't have to do any gimmicks to get the rewards. You literally just wipe out charges from your login, you don't even have to speak to anyone or jump through any hoops. I just paid for our entire cruise in April on the Allure with points. I charged it at final payment and 3 days later when it showed up, just logged in and wiped the entire charge off my account with points. Took about 30 seconds.

Most of them do but some waiver it the first year. If you have excellent credit, it does not impact your score. TPG explains it. I've opened cards(especially those with waived first year fees), done the purchases to get the opening bonus, and then cancelled the card a few months later. As a matter of fact, amex paid me $100, gave me enough miles for 2 free flights (it topped of my balance enough for 2 flights) and my bags flew free. Cancelled 6 months later.

On my last cruise, I played Ultimate Texas Holdem every day with a couple who sat down and immediately requested $1000 each off their sea pass card. (No fee because they were Casino Royale members.). At the end of each night, they would cash in their chips and start over again the next day by requesting $1000 each. At the end of a 7 day cruise, they had added $14000 to their oba which they paid off when they got home. They cruised often for free by using their RCI card.

If people find value in going after the RC Visa for the onboard credit and racking points, I don't consider that "odd behavior" at all. Some will find value in it, some won't. Personally, I'd be looking for frequent flier points. Being able to get a free plane ticket or 2 to get to my port has more value to me than $100 of OBC. :D

I agree. Southwest is probably the best

$100 in OBC is equivalent to $100 I cash, for arguments sake. If you can get $200 in cash vs $100 in OBC, I find it perplexing why someone would prefer $100 over $200. I guess some people like pre shaken sodas, spilling coffee on themselves, running into glass doors, and getting $100 instead or $200. ;)

The venture card is not a 2% cash back card. If you redeem for cash, you get half the value, plus it has a $95 annual fee. The Citi Double Cash card has no annual fee and it's straight 2% cash. The Venture card does have a big sign up bonus and with the no annual fee for the first year, it would essentially cover the annual fee for 6 years. It doesn't really offer any benefits other than no foreign transaction fees to justify using it instead of the Citi card, though.
