Brittboy Posted February 18, 2018 #1 Share Posted February 18, 2018 Is there a preference for viewing during the sailing through the canal, if you stay on your balcony ?
cb at sea Posted February 18, 2018 #2 Share Posted February 18, 2018 Both sides have views. If you stay on your balcony, you will miss 3/4's of the sights. It's really best to go from a lower outside deck, both sides, then up to the upper deck...all sides, to get the full "feel" of the canal. Sometimes, there will be another ship right next to you....it's awesome to be on a lower deck looking up at some of those container ships!
BillB48 Posted February 18, 2018 #3 Share Posted February 18, 2018 Everything CB said I would agree with, now if you are traveling with someone who might have limited ability to get around the ship, knowing which way you are transiting would be helpful in determining which side might be "better." BillB48 Posted February 19, 2018 #5 Share Posted February 19, 2018 In that direction I would give an edge to the starboard side, however you will miss quite a bit of the sights that are worth seeing.
nesheiml Posted March 3, 2018 #6 Share Posted March 3, 2018 Can you see the new locks from the old locks?
BillB48 Posted March 3, 2018 #7 Share Posted March 3, 2018 Can you see the new locks from the old locks? You really can't see the locks all that well as there is vegetation and/or a hill blocking the view to some extent. However it is possible to see a ship at the new locks, if there is one locking through. Now if you are on a transit you will be able to get a decent view of the locks from your ship, I can tell you when/where to look depending on the direction of your transit. As far as visiting the locks, to see the old locks you will have to go to Miraflores and to Agua Clara on the Atlantic side to see the new locks. Rare Keith1010 Posted March 5, 2018 #8 Share Posted March 5, 2018 Having done this transit many times I highly recommend getting out of your room and viewing the Canal from various public areas starting with the open deck. View it from being forward, being in the back, on each side and from different decks. Keith
Rare Essiesmom Posted March 5, 2018 #9 Share Posted March 5, 2018 (edited) If you know what to look at/for, and you get up really early, you might be able to see the Cocoli locks on the Pacific side. Reliant as I am on the quality/reliability of ship bridgecams, and the weather...This is what you might see: The Cocoli lock with a ship are on the left. Your ship will go around the spit of land in the center to the Miraflores locks. Here is another picture from further back. The light colored stuff on the left is the Cocoli locks. The Queen Victoria will be going to the rith, following the route of her flagpole. Once you have left the Miraflores locks, you can look to port and see the channel to the new locks. This is Crystal Serenity, unfortunately traveling the opposite direction, into the Pedro Miguel locks. The channel is to starboard for her. EM This is a map showing the relation of the locks to each other: And a picture. Cocoli lower left, Miraflores, then Pedro Miguel, and Centennial bridge at very top.
