ButterflyGirly Posted March 18, 2018 #1 Share Posted March 18, 2018 Just returned yesterday from a 6-day on the Conquest. We had a wonderful time (other than the smoke in the casino, or even if just passing by the casino). We left Grand Turk later than planned on March 14th and there was a rumor on board that a hearse was next to the ship because someone had died. Can anyone confirm this rumor? I haven't been able to find anything about it so I am hoping that it isn't true or if it is that someone died of natural causes after a very long life doing what they loved...cruising. Thanks, Kim

Thanks, Kim We were on that cruise and while I honestly do not remember which day (it could have been the day in GT), there was some sort of medical situation on our deck (deck 7) where EMT staff, ship security and people with "police" uniforms were outside a balcony cabin for quite some time with a gurney. We never heard what happened or asked. Not even any rumors. Edit: DW confirmed it was Wednesday, the 14th, the day the ship was in GT. rrdubya Posted March 19, 2018 #3 Share Posted March 19, 2018 I was also on that cruise along with a lot of my family. My sister was in cabin 7400, about 4 doors down from where the man died. I don’t know the age of the man that died but he was on the cruise with his son and daughter, their spouses and his grandchildren. They had three cabins next to my sister’s cabin. He died of natural causes. That’s about all I know about it. They placed a sign on the door saying the room could not be entered without the permission of the captain. It was on the door for the rest of the cruise.

Havingfun2010 Posted March 19, 2018 #5 Share Posted March 19, 2018 21.7 million people cruise every year. People die. Death does not know if you are on a ship or not. It is estimated about 200 people die each year. That's 4 people per week. Why are people so fascinated and want to know when a person dies on a ship? Just leave it alone and know that it happens, and it's sad, and no need to pry.
Rare Keith1010 Posted March 19, 2018 #6 Share Posted March 19, 2018 This does happen from time to time and the cruise ships do have morgues. Keith

Our last 6 cruises have had medical emergencies of some kind including going back to the port, changing itinerary, etc.!
Micahs Grandad Posted March 19, 2018 #8 Share Posted March 19, 2018 Life happens even on a cruise ship. Suspect people pass away on a 7 day cruise more often than not and details are none of our business
FlaMommy75 Posted March 19, 2018 #9 Share Posted March 19, 2018 Yes, we were on the Conquest and were sitting in our room awaiting sail away and watched the hearse drive up on the dock... a very eerie and sad sight :(

I have my own reasons for wanting to know that involve praying for the lost soul and their family.

cb at sea Posted March 19, 2018 #13 Share Posted March 19, 2018 There are more deaths on ships than you will ever know about. It's quite common. They have refrigerated areas to hold the bodies.
HeidiHo Posted March 19, 2018 #14 Share Posted March 19, 2018 There are more deaths on ships than you will ever know about. It's quite common. They have refrigerated areas to hold the bodies. Out of my 13 cruises, I have been on 3 cruises (that I know of) where someone has died. One cruise where a man had a heart attack and had to be airlifted off the ship (he supposedly survived) and another cruise where ambulances met the ship in 3 ports. And those are only the things I was aware of. I'm sure there have been other incidents that I was unaware of. Cruise ships are like small cities. Things happen same as they do at home. It's always sad, no matter where it happens.

It was a simple query by someone who was on that cruise and wondered what was happening. Try taking your own advice sometimes and "just leave it alone" instead of constantly clashing with anyone and everyone. Thank you for saying this...I was not asking for details or prying, simply trying to find out if the rumor was true. Some people here get their kicks from butting heads with everyone. The way I see it, it was a good thing that the gentleman had his family with him on the cruise. They got to share his final days and moments. It's sad, but to me, that's something to be cherished. I lost my mom 6 months ago. When I told her we had booked our upcoming cruise a few months before she passed, she said she'd love to try it. I wish she could have, I think she would've loved it. She'll definitely be with us in spirit.
ricew001 Posted March 21, 2018 #16 Share Posted March 21, 2018 Seriously people? Have you ever read a newspaper???? The obituaries are probably the most read part of a newspaper! It's only human to ask - some because they truly care, some because they worry and some are probably the same ones who watch all the crime shows and it fascinates them - right or wrong. We've all been on a ship so it hits close to home probably for some who worry what if that happens to me or my loved ones.
Earthworm Jim Posted March 22, 2018 #17 Share Posted March 22, 2018 Seriously people? Have you ever read a newspaper???? The answer is very possibly no, they don't read the newspaper. How many people do you know that do? And chances are none of the people you do know that read the newspaper are under 50. (I read the newspaper daily, and that confession is basically an acknowledgement that, yes, I am old.)

I read the Wall Street Journal, Dayton Daily News, Cleveland Plain Dealer and Circleville Herald every day they are printed actually. I'm in my 30s but look a lot younger ;)
