Beach

You should be able to take a taxi to the public beaches at your ports of call. What islands are you visiting? Check the ports of call on the related CC board to look for information as to the different beaches there or Google the port of call beaches. Many offer umbrella and chair rentals and have public facilities.

Mahogany Bay and Grand Cayman are the likely beach stops. Also hitting Cozemel and Belize

Since you've mentioned Mahogany Bay, I'm guessing you'll be on a Carnival cruise. Mahogany Bay has a beach area developed by Carnival, and is a short walk from the dock to the beach. No need for a taxi. Grand Cayman and Cozumel both have some nice beaches, but none close to where you'll dock. If you don't want to book an excursion that includes beach time, then you'll need to take a taxi to the beach. Belize is a tender port, and, aside from the shopping area at the port, there is nothing else close by. Most excursions will require a 30 - 45 minute bus ride to take you to your excursion. Go to the "Ports of Call" board on here to get more information.

Mahogany Bay has a big beach on the small island next to it. You can walk over the bridge, a long walk, or take a cable car over.

You only use a cab to get somewhere else away from the port. Cabs are outside the port.

In Grand Cayman, you can take a public bus to stops along 7 Mile beach, or to Cemetary beach. Its one fee for the whole route, but forget what it is. Or, you can swim with the Rays, go to the town of HELL or the turtle farm.

In Belize, there is no beach right there. It is a LONG tender ride in and if you want a beach there, you must take a tour. Or, go cave tubing but you will save a lot for a tour that is not the ship's!

In Cozumel its like docking at a mall with all the shops. Chananaub is a national park and has everything, a big beach, swim with the dolphins- fun to watch, bars and food, a small museum, things for kids to do and see. It is a flat cab fee to get there for all cabs, and you'll have to Google the park to see the cost to get in now.

western Caribbean cruise: We’d like toj just relax on the beach at one or 2 ports. How do we do that without booking $90 “Excursion”?

I would check with your roll call and see what others are doing, good chance that many have done these ports before, we always try to avoid cruise sponsored excursion, much more fun to just do something with a couple fellow roll call people or on your own.

GC is very easy to DIY...hop on a bus...$2.50pp and get off anywhere along 7 mile beach. There are lounger/umbrella rentals up and down the beach. Sea Grape/Public Beach area has watersport rentals, too, if you're interested. Food/drink and restrooms are there, too. Hop on the next bus headed back to port when you're ready to go.

We enjoyed Chananaub on Cozumel. Easy cab ride. Can just loll on the beach or do some of the other offered activities. Some of them are free, like the shows and some costly like swimming with the dolphins, but all your choice.
