rentayenta Posted May 15, 2018 #1 Share Posted May 15, 2018 Of course every kitchen/bar can have an off night; what food and drink have you tried that did not live up to your expectations? I realize tastes vary.
salty dingo Posted May 15, 2018 #2 Share Posted May 15, 2018 I don't know if it is still on the menu, but there was a beef wellington dish that was pretty awful.
Towel Critter Posted May 15, 2018 #3 Share Posted May 15, 2018 Meats in general. They seem to have more off nights/days than on nights/days with meats. IMO.
beachbum53 Posted May 15, 2018 #4 Share Posted May 15, 2018 Calamari rings. I had some on a previous cruise and they were chewy, like chewing on rubber bands. There must be a knack to cooking them so they come out just right. Also, I've come to the conclusion that Carnival's chefs don't know how to cook flat iron steak so that it's not tough, like chewing on a shoe. Rare Saint Greg Posted May 15, 2018 #5 Share Posted May 15, 2018 I wouldn't not try something just because someone else didn't like it. But I didn't like the Calamari, Onion Soup, or BBQ chicken flatbread.
licram Posted May 15, 2018 #6 Share Posted May 15, 2018 Flat iron steak is just that flat and as hard as a flat iron.[emoji30] Sent from my iPad using Forums

JayDeeJay Posted May 15, 2018 #8 Share Posted May 15, 2018 MDR lobster bisque was having a bad day - that was VERY tired lobster. Have tasted it since (afraid to order my own) in the Steakhouse and it was excellent. Lesson learned.

Towel Critter Posted May 15, 2018 #10 Share Posted May 15, 2018 Lobster...had it a couple times on Elegant night and it wasn't really all that good. I got a really bad one a couple of cruises ago. It smelled faintly of ammonia. I sent it back and the replacement was edible. edit: not saying it had ammonia in it, just that the smell reminded me of ammonia. grandmarnnurse Posted May 15, 2018 #12 Share Posted May 15, 2018 I don't know if it is still on the menu, but there was a beef wellington dish that was pretty awful. Really? I usually love beef Wellington. But if they make it nasty, I might not order that. [emoji22] Sent from my iPad using Forums
rentayenta Posted May 15, 2018 Author #13 Share Posted May 15, 2018 Looks like the Beef Wellington should be avoided. Thanks for the replies. Truth be told, the food pics don’t wow me. The photos are good but the food does not look exceptional. I can’t imagine how difficult it would be be cook for however many people for a week +. nicole9s Posted May 15, 2018 #14 Share Posted May 15, 2018 I've had good luck so far with the flat irons. The calamari is 'generic'. We did not care for the prime rib, and my second least favorite entree behind that was the honey glazed pork loin- too many competing flavors. coevan Posted May 16, 2018 #16 Share Posted May 16, 2018 Calamari has to be cooked to order, like at any decent Italian restaurant. Calamari or fries sitting in a steam table or under a light can not turn out well.
bury me at sea Posted May 16, 2018 #17 Share Posted May 16, 2018 I was disappointed with the crab cakes in the Steakhouse on the Breeze. A Brandy Alexander is my favorite after dinner drink but a couple of years ago they stopped stocking heavy cream at the bars and were making them with half and half. Watery and pitiful. CarnivalCruiser875 Posted May 16, 2018 #18 Share Posted May 16, 2018 Coming from a meat science background, those that complain about flat iron steaks need to understand that this particular cut not only naturally has a layer of gristle which cut with the grain (how Carnival cuts it), but it comes from a high-locomotion area on the cow. More locomotion = less tender meat. Not to sound like a smart butt, but a lesson in retail cuts is always a learning experience! :) Will agree on the calamari, like fried rubber bands. Our family loves calamari and is very picky about it in restaurants to begin with, but hey what can you expect when feeding 4,000+ people?
pjhootch Posted May 16, 2018 #19 Share Posted May 16, 2018 Scrambled eggs. I always forget and take a spoon of them on the first day or two, and promise myself never to eat them again. Either spend time at the omelet station or grab boiled eggs!
going to see the world Posted May 16, 2018 #20 Share Posted May 16, 2018 Scrambled eggs...unless you enjoy the option of eating them through a straw, because you totally could. And, I'm not sure if they even have them anymore, but the chili rellenos are awful. Less popular opinion, the funship special drink is the WORST. :halo:

Joebucks Posted May 16, 2018 #23 Share Posted May 16, 2018 The flat iron steak is very good, but you need to order it one level lower than you normally would, or it will come overcooked. I usually order medium steak. In the MDR, when I order it medium-well, it comes medium. If I order it medium, you guessed it, medium-well. Otherwise, it is an enjoyable dinner
rentayenta Posted May 16, 2018 Author #24 Share Posted May 16, 2018 Watery scrambled eggs are the worst. Gak! I will stay away. Will the omelette bar make over easy eggs or are the eggs pre-mixed?
