We only have the passport cards at this time. Do we need to get the passport book for cruising to Hawaii (roundtrip from LA, with stop in Mexico)? Also, in order to assist in the decision of whether to purchase the PBP, it would be very beneficial to know what the price is of a few different drinks? Rum and coke, bloody Mary’s and Manhattans?? Thanks

Passport card is fine as long as you don't need to fly back to the US from Mexico (ie: because of some sort of emergency).

According to the US Department of State website, the Passport Card can be used for "Entering the United States at land border crossings and sea ports-of-entry from: Canada, Mexico, The Caribbean, Bermuda." "The passport card cannot be used for international air travel."

You can use the Passport Card for an Hawaii cruise roundtrip LA. You can also use it if you need to fly home from Hawaii (domestic US flight). You cannot use if you need to fly home from Ensenada. However, you can use it to take a bus or car home from Ensenada (land border crossing).

Why not spring for a passport?

We are at the time of life where we plan to never travel to places that a passport would be required. We have lived in Europe and have traveled to many other parts of the world. So when it came to passport renewal time, we opted to go with the less expensive passport card. We will get the passport book if necessary but if the card will work why.

There was a thread 3(?) years ago about a couple who did the HI cruise out of LA. The DH surprised his wife with their first cruise for their 25th(?) anniversary.

She had (IIRC) her birth certificate and driver's license in her purse...and lost her purse on the way to the port. No time to do anything for a replacement. They actually managed to talk their way onto and off of the ship.

Amazing review that ran for many pages.
