joand452 Posted July 23, 2018 #429 Share Posted July 23, 2018 We loved Skagway. We were probably the only pax not to do the White Pass railway excursion. We did a small van excursion that followed the same route, but took us all the way into Canada. We also went to the Skagway Sculpture Garden, run by a retired Army dentist. He had a floating dental office that visited villages on the inner passage. Is the tiny gold rush museum still there? How about the twig building? I thought it was an awesome little town. Schlepporello Posted July 23, 2018 #430 Share Posted July 23, 2018 Me too, in the summer. Their winters aren't much different than ours. I'll check the temps from time to time and they are usually right with us, even with the wind.

Rare A&L_Ont Posted July 24, 2018 Author #443 Share Posted July 24, 2018 (edited) Instead of doing the typical White Pass Railroad we decided to do something different today. We went to Jewel Gardens. It was a ship run tour to which we got to work with molten glass. It was held at a place with a certified organic garden that later got into glass blowing business in 2007. Our goal today was to make Christmas ornaments. We started with clear, raw molten glass and our goal was to transfer it to this. First we got to pick our colours and appearance of the ornament and then we got to work. A glob of clear glass was picked up on our pre heated rod. It was then taken over to our preselected colours. From there it went back into the blast heater. This happened a few times in the process. It came back out to get rolled again a few times to meld the colours. Then it would get pulled to make a pattern to the ornament. It would then then get smoothed. Edited July 24, 2018 by A&L_Ont
Rare A&L_Ont Posted July 24, 2018 Author #444 Share Posted July 24, 2018 At the end of the process the glass is separated from the rod. After they added a glass eyelet to which you use to hook it to the tree. This is what our groups balls looked like. It stays in this device to slowly chill over 12 hours. They then ship it to our homes in approximately three days. After they fed us a meal to which almost all ingredients came from their garden. Afterwards we had 15 minutes to check out their gardens and gift shop. The gardens were beautiful and glass work was intermingled throughout. The salmon run has started.
Rare A&L_Ont Posted July 24, 2018 Author #445 Share Posted July 24, 2018 Just a few items that I found in their gift shop. All the glass is made in house. Afterwards we got dropped off at the ship. And this picture has some foreshadowing of the afternoon to come.

Rare A&L_Ont Posted July 24, 2018 Author #447 Share Posted July 24, 2018 So this afternoon grandma and I went on the Good Time Girls walking tour of Skagway. I nicknamed it the Whore Tour months ago. Our guide was Madam Ileaned Herover. She gave me a Skagway welcome. And yes that is tip money on in her cleavage. Yes, just the tips. When the tour was over, we were informed that is where we could leave ours as well. She made note to the size of my deposit.;) Our Madam gave us a great tour of Skagway and educated us to the storied lives of prospectors, working girls of all levels and the madams. At one point there we 80 brothels in Skagway, over the 2 year gold rush. I really won’t say much of the tour, because I don’t want to be a spoiler but it does a relatively happy ending depending on what side of the story you are. The tour ended at the Red Onion Saloon with a toast and a closer look at a madam’s lifestyle. This is a tour worth doing. It combined humour, innuendos, history and the hardships (pardon the pun) that all had thrust upon them during the gold rush.

Rare A&L_Ont Posted July 24, 2018 Author #449 Share Posted July 24, 2018 There was a question yesterday about the Gold Museum and the drift wood building in Skagway. They are both still there. Lisa and Owen went into the Museum and I have some pics of the drift wood building and will post when it can.
