cksv Posted July 18, 2018 #51 Share Posted July 18, 2018 And no O'Sheehans/Local style 24hour restaurant on Deck 7 The deck plans and dining page show The Local on Deck 7 but looks like it's smaller than it is on other ships?
Rare eroller Posted July 18, 2018 #52 Share Posted July 18, 2018 It's really a shame they are not enlarging the spa or adding the single Studio Complex. That alone will make the ship inferior to BLISS. It also goes against their own press release, which states they basically upgrading JOY to make her nearly identical to BLISS. I guess they are taking liberties with the word "nearly". Shame.
Rare eroller Posted July 18, 2018 #53 Share Posted July 18, 2018 No Cavern Club or Maltings Whisky Bar either, which are super popular on BLISS. Also the Splash Academy on Deck 5 is much smaller compared to Bliss. There is an "entertainment venue" on Deck 6 which I will assume will become the Comedy Club. And it's really hard for me to believe they are keeping those massive inside suites which were designed for large Chinese families. No single options which have become an NCL staple. My guess is somewhere down the line they will convert something to studios, only question if it's the inside suites or somewhere else. I'm guessing it's a matter of time and money right now. I think they would make more off the single Studio cabins which have become very popular. Large inside cabins are just not very appealing to most westerners. The revenue potential will probably be limited so they might end up being a great deal. Time will tell.
GateGuardian Posted July 18, 2018 #58 Share Posted July 18, 2018 NCL has posted the revised deck plans: https://www.ncl.com/cruise-ship/joy/deck-plans The staterooms are largely unchanged with the exception of a number of cabins removed from Deck 15 to expand the Observation Lounge to the same size as Bliss. This means they will be offering the Concierge level of suites in between Mini-Suites and The Haven, and no Studios. The dining venues have been changed to match the Bliss. There is no Ocean Blue as that space is the photo gallery, and the American Diner appears to be staying in lieu of Margaritaville. The Galaxy Pavilion remains intact, meaning the spa will be significantly smaller than other ships. They have added an enlarged fitness center one level up in the place of the noodle bar restaurant. They do not appear to be adding or enlarging the pool. Thanks!
davesgirl51 Posted July 18, 2018 #59 Share Posted July 18, 2018 (edited) When Joy goes to west coast Jewel will do Australia, New Zealand, and South Pacific sailing from Honolulu, Papeete, Sydney, Auckland, Singapore, Hong Kong and Yokohama. Jade will also reposition to Southeast Asia departing from Singapore and Hong Kong 2019-2020. Prior to her arrival in China, the Spirit will receive her “Edge” bow to stern revitalization. rtkenmore Posted July 19, 2018 #61 Share Posted July 19, 2018 Regarding JOY, I'm guessing we will see a redesigned main pool area with bars added, the removal of the large enclosed aft game center and in its place a much enlarged spa. Also the large interior family suites will make way for NCL's single Studio Complex. I can also imagine the large casino will be reduced in size, and some retail, dining, and entertainment changes. I bet the hull art is changed as well, as that is very China specific ... although they never changed the hull art on Norwegian Sky (former Pride of Aloha) after she left Hawaii. I would say NCL made a pretty big blunder specializing the ship so much for China. Now they have to spend $50 million on a brand new ship to make her appealing to a different market. They certainly miscalculated as to how quickly the China market would mature. Just a month ago they were touting how China has improved and there were no plans to redeploy JOY. Fake news? LOL Galaxy Pavilion remains and Joy will not have a thermal suite like other Breakaway-Plus ships - only the Mandara Spa treatment rooms. Deck plans are already posted and inside family concierge are remaining as well. NO studios.
rtkenmore Posted July 19, 2018 #62 Share Posted July 19, 2018 in order to do any kind of this work, the ship needs to be dry docked. It looks like all of the changes they are doing is mostly just cosmetic and is something that can be done at port/sea. The ship is only about a year old, too early for dry dock. I wont be surprised to see a big major drydock plan in the next 5 years when the ship is due for it. They're not doing $50 million worth of work to Joy while at sea. That's definitely enough work to put the ship into a short dry dock especially since they are apparently removing some cabins from Deck 15 to enlarge the Observation Lounge among other things. sparkmaster Posted July 19, 2018 #63 Share Posted July 19, 2018 Obviously this is an absolute failure of the domestic Chinese market to deliver revenues up to the level NCL expected. This is a huge loss for the company. First is the money, the money spent researching, designing, and building a ship especially suited to Chinese tastes. Then the $50 Million to tear it all out and make it Bliss v2.0. Then you have the effort of developing institutional cultural competency, delivering a vacation experience to a culture vastly different then the one NCL was used to serving. This should seriously scare a lot of the western mainstream lines from doing something like this for a while.

Cruisercl Posted July 19, 2018 #66 Share Posted July 19, 2018 All interesting information here. Question; weren't the cabins also made smaller in size or did I dream that? :p:p I thought I had read that during the building of the Joy. Thanks everyone for the info! JillK Posted July 19, 2018 #67 Share Posted July 19, 2018 Like most others here, I was surprised to read about this redeployment yesterday. I'm thrilled to see they are keeping the inside family suites. We are a family of 6 and cruising all together has meant separate cabins for us. I will be curious to see how these suites are priced. My parents were booked on the Pearl to Alaska next year and my mom is beyond thrilled that her booking is going to be automatically transferred to the Joy in a comparable or better stateroom category than she had booked on the Pearl for the same price. fshagan Posted July 19, 2018 #71 Share Posted July 19, 2018 You know it's not enough demand. The thing that surprises me is how they could so badly screw up projections. There was more than one cruise line rushing into the Chinese market. There probably is a "winner" of that market and it doesn't look like it's NCL! There probably is a "winner" of that market and it doesn't look like it's NCL! Just a couple months ago NCL execs were announcing how well the Joy was doing in China. Things like highest occupancy in the fleet and sold out cruises for the first half of 2018.
