Smoking policy enforcement

We're considering NCL for a cruise, and DW is extremely sensitive to secondhand smoke.  I'm aware the policy is no smoking allowed on balconies, but I'm looking for opinions on how well this is enforced.  Anyone ever have a problem with a neighbor smoking on their balcony and NCL was not able to solve the problem?

On the Sky a couple years ago, the person maybe 8 or 9 staterooms down from us was smoking on his balcony (he was standing at the balcony with hands over the rails). He was far enough down that I couldn't exactly just chat with him, so I called Guest Services. They talked to the person, and called us back to ask that we let them know if it happened again. Didn't happen again the rest of the cruise.

We were on the Getaway last week and you could smell smoke from others on balconies when we were at sea. We couldn't figure out where it was coming from, so couldn't report it.

Honestly if that is a big issue you guys are better off sailing on a ship that is smoke free. Celebrity maybe?

On most of our cruises we haven't had smoke from adjoining balconies. On a couple it has happened, but it usually gets taken care of right away. There's a sizable fine in the cruise contract, and I think the threat of paying that fine is presented to the miscreants to "encourage" them to stop smoking on the balconies.

NCL does allow smoking in the casinos, and depending on the ship, the smoke from the casino can invade other areas. We have found it easy enough to learn those areas and avoid them. Our experience has been that the smaller ships have less "drift" of smoke, while the Epic - the only large NCL ship we have been on - had more casino smoke smell outside of the casino. The layout of the Epic almost forces you through the casino to go from the theater in the bow to the dining room at the stern; we learned to go up to floor 8 (the cabins directly above the public areas on floors 5, 6 and 7). IF I'm recalling this correctly, the casino is on floor 6 and to go aft from floor 5 or 7 you have to go up or down a floor and go through the casino.

But it's easily avoided once you figure that kind of thing out.

4 letters COPD. DW smoked for 35-40 years quit 7 years ago. Yes she has breathing problems at times. Smoke definitely affects her now.

How about the smokers just follow the rules and smoke where IT IS allowed. We have learned how to avoid smoking areas. We aren't going to avoid our balcony, so respect others.

If people want to smoke that is their choice, just do it where allowed.

Just off the Bliss and did not smell smoke once, even in the casino. They have made a special, enclosed section for smokers and the rest is non-smoking. Bliss would be a great option for you!

Ii was wondering how that was working out! Thanks for the report.

I would definitely consider the Bliss, since they have enclosed the smoking area of the Casino. So far, I have only sailed on two NCL ships, the Escape and the Gem. On the Escape, the smoke from the casino can be an issue in the whole 6-7-8 common area, which you will likely walk through often on your way around the ship. On the Gem, the casino isn't as centrally located, but smoke can still be an issue when making your way to the theater or the bar/lounge area on Deck 6.

Celebrity is not smoke free.  They have the same policies as NCL, with the exception that NCL allows smoking in the Casino.

It depends on the NCL ship as to whether your wife will have issues even if all the policies are enforced.  Smoking is allowed on the starboard side waterfront bar on the Breakaway class ships,  plus the casino smoking can permeate several areas on these ships too.

I had major issues on both the Breakaway and Getaway, but not on the Gem.

Yes -- and not only on Norwegian.    We thought of booking a forward balcony for this reason but on Anthem of the Seas in August people were still smoking around us--in clear view of the bridge.  Yes, I reported it.

Really how it will be handled depends who is on staff.  I've seen totally unresponsive people, and ones who immediately took action.  Both on Norwegian, and other lines as well.

This would not stop me from booking on any cruise line--at this time anyway.    I like variety!

We are just off the Bliss too and it was pretty smoke free most of the time.  We did smell smoke near the casino one day. Maybe someone left the door open too long.  I wouldnt really call it second hand smoke since there was no smoke, just the smell.  One day on the balcony I smelled some "skunk" but was never invited to partake:classic_tongue:.  But overall there was very little smoke and it was similar to a Celebrity ship smoke wise.

You might need to do some search reviews on specific ships.  There was a thread here within the past month about the Dawn where smoking is allowed port of deck 7, but if you have a balcony on 8 over the area, it might still be noticable.  Seems there was spillover to starboard side as well and some area midships.  Deck 7 seems to be the promenade deck, so if you are a walker wanting to laps, be aware.  It isn't just the casino that may impact.

The poster was not happy and felt the smoke was too prevalent, and others didn't notice it at all.  I am boarding Dawn Friday and have smoke sensitivities. I'll report back.

Wouldn't it be impossible for smoke to blow BACK to the front of the ship.  Might blow up or down from another forward facing cabin but not back.  🙂

I think that’s what they mean. If they didn’t book a forward cabin the smoke would blow towards the aft cabins.

We do the same, we book forward cabins, but we still had a guy 2 cabins forward and two decks down from us who smoked on the balcony. It wafted my way, so i looked looked down and he saw me and quickly extinguished it.

I was was thinking if he knew he was going to smoke on the balcony why in the world would he book a forward cabin? Wouldn’t it make more sense if he booked as far aft as he could?

During the behind the scenes tour on the Escape in September they were talking about banning smoking throughout NCL. No smoking stations, no smoking in the casino. If you were caught smoking your account would be billed $500.00 I applaud them for it, hopefully it will happen

Don't know if this will ever happen.  I would like to see no smoking in the casino and then a couple outside enclosed areas for smoking.

Every cruise I have been on there has been smoking on the balconies, either under or beside us. I know there is a stiff fine if the people get caught, but it seems to happen anyway. It doesn't bother me enough to call on them, but I suppose, if you were sure where it was coming from you could. The smoke in the casino....that is a problem for me.

I just heard about that. I wish they would do that on all ships and in all casinos. I am an occasional smoker (I know, stupid), but still I hate the smoke in casinos. Next time it's the Bliss for me 🙂
