How do I replace current avatar with a single letter

I have been trying to delete my current avatar and replace it with the popular single letter in a square. The new /small size limit suits this type of avatar. Can anyone help me please? I can neither cancel or upload my profile picture at this point. Will the glitch be fixed in due course?

The single letter in the square is for people with no avatars. So just delete your existing one.

Unfortunately, deleting doesn't work.

Go to your profile. In the lower left corner of your avatar is a picture icon. Click/tap the button. Select No Photo. Click save.
