Which of these Danube ports we can walk off the ship...

...into town?

Or, I guess another way of asking is, "How far is town from where we would dock? Can we actually stroll into town?"

I would be on Amawaterways.

  • Vilshofen
  • Passau
  • Linz (jumping off point for bus tours to Cesky Krumlove, or Salzburg)
  • Weissenkirchen
  • Vienna
  • Bratislava
  • Budapest

Thanks for your advice!

I can answer for a couple of ports......

  • Vilshofen
  • Passau - right in town.
  • Linz (jumping off point for bus tours to Cesky Krumlove, or Salzburg)
  • Weissenkirchen
  • Vienna - nowhere near the town. Need a shuttle or we caught a train in.
  • Bratislava - been past it but didn't stop. Looked like it was right in town.
  • Budapest - right in town. But depending on your cruise line, will depend where you dock. We cruised on Viking and they had three different pontoons to dock at. They are all "in town", some just a little longer a walk.

Vienna: this seems to say to me that Amawaterways uses the Nussdorf dock. It is a suburb connected with the city centre by tram and train. The tram ride is pleasant but in the evening, for your safety, I recommend relying on the shuttle provided by the company.

In Bratislava you walk across some train tracks and you're there.  Vienna is the only port that's not close.  When I and 2 other passengers wanted to visit a museum after our schedule tour, the Uniworld front desk staff called a taxi for us.  I'm sure AMA would do the same.

Below is where we docked:

  • Vilshofen - docked in town
  • Passau - docked in town
  • Linz (docked  in town, across from the Ars Electronica Center - we walked to the train station & took the train to Salzburg)
  • Vienna - docked in Nussdorf - took tram D into the city (about a 30 minute ride to reach Opera on the Ringstrasse)
  • Bratislava - docked in town
  • Budapest - docked in town (next to Elisabeth bridge)

In Passau the Crystal Mozart was too large to park right in town and we were at the farther dock.  It was a 5 minute bus ride to the place the other ships were docked in town.  I don’t know if this varies with river conditions or it is always this way for the Mozart.

Vienna depends on where you dock. If you are in Nussdorf, yes it will be a bit more complicated and take about 30 minutes. If you are near Mexikoplatz/U1 Metrostop Vorgartenstraße a lot less (approx. 10 minute metro ride) and it is very straight forward to get to Stephansplatz.
