Hello- I will be traveling with my 3 kids in February---They will be 9 and 12---I am not sure if they will have motion sickness but would like to give them something for a preventative so we don't have to worry about it----Can they wear the patch? Do I have to  get from their doctor? Any other suggestions?

Of course you should check with your pediatrician. However we've found that Bonine has a chewable Raspberry flavored for children that has worked well.

I would consider your doctor may feel that the patch has too many unwanted side affects not only for adults but certainly for children...Of course they are the expert's and their advice should be followed as they know your children and their medical history.

Best of luck ...enjoy your cruise and hopefully they won't need anything at all.

The Gravol non-drowsy ginger lozenges are great. They're chewable so no need to worry about swallowing pills and taste like ginger. They are also suitable to be used by children and can be purchased at your local drugstore (not over the counter). It has been the best motion sickness medicine that I've taken on both rollercoasters and boats alike.

I also like Seabands - essentially, the bracelet that uses acupressure to help prevent nausea. These can also be purchased at drugstores. No need to worry about any medication with these, though I have heard mixed reviews from different folks. They work well for me though, so it's worth giving them a try.

Non-medicinal options include ginger ale, as the carbonation really helps settle the stomach! I also like candied ginger. You can make your own or purchase from a store - I usually get mine from a Chinese herbal medicine shop in bulk. Of course, these methods are not as effective as the Gravol or Seabands but they do work in a pinch.

As a kid, I used Seabands and ginger to help with motion sickness. I've never tried the patch. I think that there are lots of other alternatives besides the patch that don't bring some of the side-effects and don't have to be purchased over the counter.

Agree, your doctor is the best source of advice.  I'd also suggest that the prevention remedy that works for many adults will also work for children:  keep their tummies full!  After all, what is one of the first things cruise lines want us to do after we embark?  Eat!
