The same holds true for the ports of  Baltimore and Jacksonville.

Some years back, I was driving into the Harbor Tunnel  in Baltimore, just as one of the Spirit class ships (not sure which ship was there at the time) was sailing over us.  It was a pretty cool sight.

They're different enough that they can market them as new ships. Most people (and I said most before 1000 old people quote me and say they like old ships) don't care to cruise on old ships like the fantasy class. Destiny class was the next oldest but more similar in size to the current classes

I'm only 43, and I like the Fantasy class. Personally, I think they are better designed than the Destiny/Triumph/Victory as well as the Conquest class.

I did like the Horizon though. 👍

What is there to debate?  I have my opinion, I'm not sailing OLD ships, even if they have been remodeled to generate more income for the Corporation than that OLD ship did.  Rebranding and repurposing can be an effective technique to get consumers to keep buying a product.

I prefer the newer Dream and Vista class ships on Carnival, although I will sail a Conquest class ship for the tiny reduction a casino fare gives me.  I just happen to like the larger, newer ships.  I will be making an exception for the Legend's cruise to Norway though.

Nothing wrong with your opinion either, that's why there's no debate.  We are both right if we remain true to ourselves.  Have fun sailing the Sunrise, Sunshine, Sunset, whatever, I'll stick to the type ship that appeals to me.  My opinion may get even more jaundiced after I sail RCCL's Symphony OTS.

It's a nice ship, with the exception of the giant purple eye sore known as the Abyss.

The Spirit Class can fit, so I am willing to bet that the Sunshine Class can.

Sorry, you would lose that bet, as they stand now. They would need to reduce the funnel by 30+ feet. I am not even sure if the forward mast or the aft slide tower are below the 180.5 feet of clearance on the Sunshine Skyway.

They are taking the class of ship between Fantasy Class and Conquest Class originally called the Destiny Class and transforming them to a new class that evoke a sun theme.

The only ships that were ever in the Destiny Class were the Destiny, the Triumph and the Victory.  After a few years (I don't remember exactly) they changed it because the Destiny had one less deck.  The Destiny was in a class by itself and the other two became the Triumph Class.  When the Conquest came out, she was the first of the Conquest Class.

Two other examples i forgot. Both also NCL.

The Pride Of Hawaii was pulled from Hawaii and redone as the Norwegian Jade and the Pride Of Aloha is now the NCL Sky.

Those 2 made a little more sense because they had to be re-flagged from the US to the Bahamas and rebranded from NCLA to NCL.

I don't really care one way or the other what CCL does with their ship names; I only wish the cruise lines would be more imaginative and not copy one another.....in this case, Radiance.

Just did a quick bit of research to find out how predominant it is regarding the laziness of cruise lines copying the names of current ships afloat.  here's a small sample of what I found.

STAR  NCL 2001...Princess 2002...Viking 2015

SUN  Princess 1995...NCL 2001...Viking 2017

My first CCL cruise was on Triumph 3 years ago out of NOLA. I would like to sail on the new Sunrise too. I liked Triumph and would love to see the transformation. We looked for a Sunrise cruise for 2020 but it didn't work out and we booked on the Sunshine for 2020. I live in Maine, and when the Sunrise is in port on Jeff's cruise I plan to go check her out.

It's a shame that none of the cruises out of NYC on the Sunrise in 2020 did not fit your time frame.  Between 5/25/20-10/15/20, there are 8 cruises to Bermuda, 7 cruises to Cuba & Bahamas and another 7 to Caribbean & Bahamas.

My wife works in the school system and can't take time off during the year. We chose Sunshine due to value, trip dates and itinerary. Horizon with my family in one week, then an anniversary cruise adults only with friends on Sunshine. I have nothing to complain about!

The Carnival Triumph has a horrible history of becoming the Poop ship. It makes sense to rename the ship to get rid of the past

just make it a pirate cruise...gives a whole new meaning to the term "poop deck"

All of the cruises I listed were drivable for you from Maine to NYC and the majority were over the summer so your wife's work schedule would not be a problem.  But if going on the Sunshine and having to fly is better for you....enjoy.

Just thought I would point out that Celebrity wasn't terrible innovative with that name to begin with, now was the US Navy!

The Navy has had 3 USS Constellations

1) 1797 Frigate built in Baltimore

2) 1854 Sloop of War built in Norfolk, VA and currently a museum ship in Baltimore

3) 1960 Aircraft Carrier CV-64, Built in Brooklyn, NY and scrapped in 2017

Carnival must think renaming the ships is a better business move than not.  I would guess that since their fleet is so large, and i would guess their average customer goes on less cruises, that they have less loyalty/preference to any particular ship instead of the brand as a whole.

I am the opposite, I like the old names.  It won't make me more likely to try it out.  Doesn't mean I wont.

I've sailed her twice...noticed nothing either time. Unless it happened after march of 2010...

I think they will always have a future if they want to continue having ships sail from Tampa.  Larger ships can't get under the bridge.

Seems like there is always a limiting factor. NYC has the same problem and I'm sure some ports have the problem of the underwater clearance that we don't know about with reefs or such. In an ideal world they could offer any ship at any port and rotate them. One can dream...

It did. 2013 was the famous poop cruise that had CNN slobbering in flag to flag coverage for nearly a week.

2013...that was when life was in a nice tailspin for me (life happens) and cruising was furthest thing from my mind. Thanks for explaining...i was curious what everyone was referring to. I'll have to look into it further when I get time.

To me, it's like putting lipstick on a pig.  The old ship was old for a reason.  I sailed Destiny in 2008 and it was old then.

Carnival re -does the ship to lessen public space, and to add more cabins and other revenue generating venues.

I'll stick to the newer ships, except when casino fares snare me on the Conquest class.

People believe the hype and think they are going on a new ship.. SURPRISE

In my world a 20 plus year old ship is not a brand new one no matter how much renovation is done to her.

I have not and plan not to sail the Sunshine. One of our favorite things on a ship is comedy club and the Sunshine;s is terribly lacking in size.

Sometimes, things get old and need renovation. This is obvious. When the renovation is big enough, they can give the ship a new name as a way of saying that the changes were so great that it might as well be a different ship. It’s that simple.
