Monitoring your every movement.

That was my very first thought!  How long you stay in your cabin, what your favorite beverage is when you're on the balcony.  What you're listening to, and maybe what you're saying.  Yeah, call me paranoid and for good reasons.

Really???? Like they have thousands of people manning monitors watching each individuals every move. What do you guys do onboard that you are so afraid that Princess might find out?

A little romance on your balcony?  Some not so nice sounds coming from the bathroom while you're in there.

The hysteria is laughable.   🙄

It makes you wonder if they have been doing that, all along.

The cruise lines know

  • Every ship I have been on.
  • Every port I have visited.
  • Every T-Shirt, piece of jewelry, cap, sweater, shawl, candy bar, bottle of liquor, carton of cigarettes--you get the gist--that my wife or I have ever purchased in one of the ship's stores.
  • Every specialty coffee I've ever purchased or how many times I have purchased a specialty coffee promotion.
  • Every "winning" bid that I have placed in an art auction.
  • Every beer or cocktail I have ever ordered in a bar.
  • Every ship-sponsored port excursion I've taken.
  • How much I've lost in the casino.
  • How many Specialty Dinners I have had.
  • Every haircut and massage I have received in a spa.
  • How often I have ordered flowers for the cabin.
  • Every bottle of wine I have ordered with dinner.
  • Every Room Service request I have made.
  • How many photographs I have ordered.

And with the Medallion (assuming you have it with you), Princess will know:

o How much time you spend in your cabin and when you are in your cabin

o How much time you are in your cabin bathroom and which public restrooms you use

o How long before showtime you get you seat in the Theater

o Whether you take stairs or elevators

o How long you sit in the atrium

o Which shops you went into and did not make a purchase

etc.

No, but several computers can easily collect the information.

Good point on the RFID.  We have small RFID blocker sleeves for credit cards and a larger one for passports.  Unknown if "Medallion" can scan the chips in both credit cards/passports...  Likely "Medallion" was not designed to steal that kind of information, but just as likely that it can be accomplished by either a nefarious passenger or crew member.

Yes I agree.

Just for the record, I don't care.  In fact, I am open to the possibility that it might actually benefit me.

I am quite used to surrendering my anonymity.  I regularly carry my mobile phone in my pocket.  As has been discussed earlier in this thread, It broadcasts my presence to  every cell tower I pass.  It is my choice to carry the mobile phone.  If things like that bothered me, then the obvious solution is to not carry it.  OK, I agree that I could power it off.  That would work until the moment that I wanted to use it.  So, since I see the personal benefit, I trade off that anonymity.

What if the cell phone is turned off?

The cell phone only delivers information (location), or allows you to order. It is the Medallion that transmits its number, so works regardless of your cell phone. The ship uses the antennas to figure out the Medallion's approximate location. The ship can also look up which passenger is associated with the medallion, and then look up that person's information. Some of that information you can access with your cell phone (if it is turned on and logged in).
