bluemarble Posted May 29, 2019 #1 Share Posted May 29, 2019 (edited) I've never had a problem embedding a link to another site in a forum post before. But today I created a post with this link to the NYCruise cruise schedule in it. https://www.nycruise.com/schedule/ I just copied the URL from my browser's address bar and pasted it into the post. It looked like an active link while in editing mode. But it showed up as static text in preview mode. And it ended up as static text in the final post. Anyone else having problems getting links to work in new posts today? Edited May 29, 2019 by bluemarble
Rare broberts Posted May 29, 2019 #2 Share Posted May 29, 2019 Posting links does work. CC is removing the hyperlink for this site. You could email community@cruisecritic.com if you think the site link should not be removed. From https://boards.cruisecritic.com.au/guidelines/#guides_others "Other Cruise & Travel SitesCruise Critic reserves the right to approve or deny links which lead directly to or link to cruise-related material or message boards that are not located within Cruise Critic. Additionally, we respectfully request that you do not use our forums to promote or advertise other cruise-related websites."

It never occurred to me that Cruise Critic would have started blocking links to that nycruise site. I've posted links to that site numerous times in the past since it's the closest thing we have to an official cruise schedule for the Brooklyn and Manhattan cruise terminals. I will definitely be following up with Cruise Critic about that. Thanks for your help.
Rare Essiesmom Posted May 29, 2019 #4 Share Posted May 29, 2019 It happens with other innocuous sites, too. Cruisetimetables.com is another, cruisedeckplans too, I think. They used to post as links, but not since the October shakeup. EM

EM This particular issue with the nycruise site appears to have started within the past month or so. The last post I can find with a working link to that site is from April 16. The next post with an attempted link to that site I see is from May 6 and the link has been removed from that post. At least I know what's going on now. Thanks for the help. TxCityKat Posted May 29, 2019 #6 Share Posted May 29, 2019 More info re this topic from the Community Guidelines: Question: Why don't you allow us to post about other cruise sites? My post contains *** and then you removed it! Answer: Actually, we do allow the legitimate linking to information at another cruise site, as long as that link isn't posted in an attempt to drive traffic to that site (in the sole discretion of Cruise Critic), or if the posting of such site is meant to cause disruption within the community. If a website's url or name is replaced by a series of *****, it may mean that particular website had spammed our community with advertisements for their site, or that member(s) may have posted in a way that we consider self-promotion or advertising. Thanks, I'm familiar with that type of censoring of other websites within Cruise Critic forum posts. In this case, the reference to "nycruise" is not being censored by replacing it with "*******". It's the ability to embed a link to that site that is being disabled. Users can still copy and paste the URL to https://www.nycruise.com/schedule into their browsers to get to the New York cruise schedule. It's just more work that way rather than retaining it as a live link within the post that users can click on to get there directly (as it used to work last month for that particular site). bluemarble Posted May 29, 2019 Author #9 Share Posted May 29, 2019 Yeah, it does seem odd to me that they have started disabling links to nycruise.com in light of how many other similar sites they are not disabling. Here is a test of several other similar cruise-related websites, including those that Essiesmom mentioned above. https://www.cruisetimetables.com https://cruisedeckplans.com http://cruisett.com http://www.cruisecal.com http://crew-center.com https://www.nycruise.com https://www.brooklyncruiseguide.com This doesn't even mention the multitude of popular travel agent and cruise booking web sites that they let through, even though mentioning those sites are clearly in violation of the Cruise Critic rules. I suppose they have their reasons, but I have submitted an email to "community@cruisecritic.com" asking if this situation with the link being disabled for the "nycruise" site can be rectified.
