Belfast--Need your opinion!

One of the most illustrious names in British shipbuilding looks set to disappear with the filing for insolvency of Belfast’s Harland and Wolff Tuesday. Accountancy firm BDO has been appointed administrator.

 

Under Norwegian parent company Fred Olsen Energy the shipyard has been carrying out mainly marine engineering projects such as oil rig refurbishment and work on wind turbines of late, employing a workforce of around 130 persons.

 

£50m refurb of Azamara Pursuit

The last ship the yard built was a ferry for the Ministry of Defence in 2003, while last year it carried out a £50m refurbishment of the cruise ship Azamara Pursuit. Outfitting specialist MJM Group managed the refit – the first time that Royal Caribbean Cruises Ltd., owner of the Azamara brand, had chosen a UK shipyard for such a project.

 

All a far cry from the yard’s glory days back in the early 20^th century when it was the world’s leading builder of ocean liners – including the ill-fated Titanic, constructed at the yard between 1909 and 1911. At its height Harland and Wolff employed more than 30,000 workers.

I'm hoping to return to Belfast to do the C.S. Lewis tour- I believe there are Narnia statues?

Plus seeing the house where he was born.

Is that easy to do?

This has been rumoured for months.  Last week the workers were picketing and asking the MP's to intervene, but seeing how Stormont hasn't convened in over two years, the chances of that happening were pretty well impossible.

Very.  Take the G1 (purple) Glider from the north side of City Hall to the East Side Visitors Center.  CS Lewis Park where the Narnia statues are is adjacent.  The CS Lewis statue is a block or so further east.  That Glider goes through Queens Square, so if you are coming off a cruise ship, picking up the Glider there would be a better option.

 

I believe his house is someplace in England, not NI.

I believe his birthplace is a house just south of Belfast, and the view of the mountains from there made a big impression on his life. He returned each holiday from his disliked English boarding schools, but I don't think he left until he went to University. x

We are just back from Belfast 2 weeks ago. Had a private tour for 4, and it was FANTASTIC! I cant recommend it enough. We picked what we wanted to do, and Alister told us what was feasible or not.

The house where Lewis was born, in Dundela Avenue, no longer exists, although there is a Blue Plaque to mark the spot. The later childhood home, Little Lea, is still standing, but a private house. This is where he allegedly gazed out  over the Lough. Both these sites are also in East Belfast, so I don’t know what you are thinking of south of the city.

I don't see the point.  Belfast is a very compact and walkable city.  You miss the local flavor bus cruising by on a bus--or getting caught up in traffic.  Which attractions are you interested in?

 Thank you.  I am not sure yet.  Just starting to research this port.
