TGBoss Posted June 14, 2019 #2 Share Posted June 14, 2019 We were in Copenhagen last month, and had dinner at Karla, a small restaurant close to Tivoli. Reasonable prices, very good food. You might want to get a reservation as it is quite small.
dogs4fun Posted June 14, 2019 #3 Share Posted June 14, 2019 Copenhagen - We love Groften. It is located in Tivoli Gardens and the ambience in the evening is magical. It was originally the Theater Cafe in the 1870's and is one of Tivoli's oldest and most traditional restaurants. Food and service are excellent. Reservations are a must. If interested, you can check-out their menu & reserve online here: https://www.groeften.dk/uk/welcome/

Unfortunately, we had no idea that smoking was allowed there, and specifically had no idea that smoking was allowed in the sort of garden-like area where we were seated. Shortly after being seated, we noticed ashtrays on the table, and then the unmistakable smell of someone smoking a cigar at a table nearby, which for us is a total dealbreaker. We asked our server if we could be moved, and she brought us to another table, which would have been fine. Suddenly, a male supervisor type came over and started yelling at our server (no idea what he said), who then asked us to leave that table and follow her to another. She took us to a different area, which was a designated non-smoking area. This turned out to be right above the smoking section, with windows open between them and smoke wafting up. So... long story short, we did not get to eat at Groften, sadly. And a tip for other Americans who may not expect smoking in nice restaurants... Make sure you inform them at the outset if you don't want to be in or next to a smoking section.

We have enjoyed dinner at Groften on 3 occasions and never smelled smoke or noticed anyone smoking.

Your recommendation regarding informing of smoke preferences is, imho, a good idea in light of what you experienced.
GradUT Posted June 14, 2019 #8 Share Posted June 14, 2019 We found restaurant prices pretty high when we were in Copenhagen. One moderately-priced restaurant that was recommended to us was Riz Raz which is a vegetarian buffet. I’m not a vegetarian, but the food was delicious and plentiful! We ate at the restaurant at Store Kannikestraede 19 which had a nice outdoor dining patio. It’s about a 15 minute walk to Tivoli. There is another location closer to Tivoli at Kompagnestraese 20. Sauer-kraut Posted June 14, 2019 #9 Share Posted June 14, 2019 (edited) We ate at the Wenzel Prager Bierstube, if you want traditional German fare. Not sure when you will be there, but it is Spargelzeit = asparagus time in Germany. You will find a lot of special menus with the white asparagus offered. Dressed in Hollandaise Sauce or butter sauce with Schinken (ham), asparagus cream soup and other things. My most favorite time of year in Germany! The restaurant was quite good, not far from the train station right on the canal. You do have to go upstairs for the restaurant, and I can't remember if there was an elevator. If you wander the canal (river) there are restaurants all up and down. Edited June 14, 2019 by Sauer-kraut
