Can anyone tell me if Carnival offers Pickleball on any of the ships? I know that RCL has it on some and hope Carnival is following their lead.

No, I have never seen pickle ball on any of the ships I have been on.

Pickleball is a fun sport started in 1965 in Washington State. It's similar to tennis or badminton, but played with a paddle larger than a table tennis paddle, and a wiffle ball, and a lower net. You Tube has several videos to show the sport being played. My husband and I are just beginners, but we really enjoy this fast, fun growing activity. We had never enjoyed other similar racquet sports.

I find pickleball extremely boring, but I have been playing tennis since I was a kid. However, I can see pickleball possibly being more appealing to me when I get older., since it is far less demanding physically than tennis.

I agree. I used to play squash, and I could see pickleball being a less intense sport for me to play on a ship.

I can understand seasoned tennis or other racquet sports enthusiasts may find Pickleball boring, but for those of us with some joint ailments or lack of previous sports experiences, its a good way for us to get out and moving. It's also a social game and great way to meet people if we switch players in and out after every game since a game can be very quick.

Lots of pickleboard courts here in SW Florida.  Many HOAs have designated hours for playing, and some have banned certain rackets due to the noise generated when hitting the ball.

Lots of seniors enjoy the game and can get some decent exercise.  I've never seen a pickleboard court on a Carnival ship.  I believe some Celebrity ships have them.

Got to stay out of the kitchen!

Ok. I'm clueless.  What is pickleball.

Someone said it was started in 1965, but you sure could've fooled me. I had never heard of it until my son started playing it in PE a few years ago. He went to the same school district his mom and I did and we never played it. I like badminton, although I can't remember the last time I played it. Not sure if I'd like pickleball. I watched the video on the Wikipedia page and the noise the ball makes hitting the paddle would probably drive me nuts.

On the bright side, I guess it introduces kids to a wiffle ball, because I've talked to some that didn't even know what a wiffle ball was.

So for those who have played it or seen it played on other cruise lines, how do you keep the wiffle ball from catching air?

When I was in physical education quite a while back in middle school (5+ years), I never played Pickleball. Schools must be beginning to implement this.

Since kickball and dodgeball are big no no's in schools these days, I guess they've found alternatives where you don't intentionally throw the ball at your opponent as hard as you can.

I know, right. I didn't even like or play sports growing up, but wiffle ball was different. It was a staple of our childhood.

Pickleball championships in Naples, FL are sponsored by Margaritaville and Minto Communities (which builds Lattitudes Margaritaville 55+ communities) every April.

oddly the championships can be caught on tape delay, like 3-4 weeks delay, on sports cable channel.

it would be a pretty cool activity on Carnival ships, I could see folks being baffled by the title in their daily Fun Times!

That's part of the appeal!  The wiffle ball has many holes in it, more for outside pickleball vs inside pickleball.  It's not as big as a softball yet slightly bigger than a baseball.  I'm a slice and dice specialist and it drives most of my opponents nuts.  However, you can put topspin on it much like a standard tennis forehand.  The pop of the paddle hitting the ball has never bothered me.  It actually seems to resonate more when you are away from the courts a bit.

I was a very active tennis player but then had knee replacement surgery more than 3 years ago and my recovery didn't allow me to resume tennis at the level I was accustomed to, pickleball has been a Godsend for me.

C'mon Carnival, offer some pickleball.

I meant more along the lines of the ball getting blown away. The wiffle balls we played with as kids didn't handle wind well. It made for interesting games sometimes, though. But on a cruise ship... Do those other lines position the courts in places out of the wind?

The only way this could work would be on like an Oasis Class Ship, where the wind is minimal as the multi-sports court is located at the back of the ship covered in netting.

Yeah. On Conquest class, the sports deck is tucked between walls forward and aft.
