Is the Sunrise a new ship?

Almost everything. Somehow me and the people I cruises with made the booking knowing the sunshine and sunrise were transformed ships from the destiny and triumph. Must be they did a bad job advertising it as brand new ships because I didn’t get tricked like some of you. And not everything carnival I posted above was a press release. Nice attempt though.

You are comparing actual pax on board with double occupancy capacity.  Double occupancy is << max capacity, and is usually << actual pax on board.

[edited->] So your cruise with 3650 pax on board was less than max capacity, and was less than 200 pax more than the max number of people that sailed when she was Triumph.

Wow.  It can hold more!  Crazy.  There are many folks that share in the crowded theme (see below).  Even our waiter who has been with Carnival for 21 years said the Sunrise was the most crowded he has ever seen.

 

Overall I gave it a B and we enjoyed it.  Just wouldn't go on her again.  Honestly I should have known better.

 

I own CCL stock and understand the earnings per share drive, i.e., more cabins on the same ship.  Makes perfect financial sense.  The URL below is fascinating especially the charts in Figure 5 as CCL Gross Margin and OI have been flat the past few years.  That is concerning both as a shareholder and a customer, i.e., what else will they cut back on?  Hopefully they won't convert deck zero to cabins to improve yield!

I’ve been on many cruises where the ship was crowded in one place or the other. The only place that felt crowded on the sunrise was lunch on the lido. But with so many other options, there was no need to go to the lido buffet very much. I don’t remember any other place being over crowded.

Almost booked a Royal cruise yesterday, but booked the Legend instead..... it can still happen.  Have not gotten close to booking Princess yet, but have toured three...

Do it. I went on an RCL cruise and it was great. Each line has a lot of similar things and some things are better on carnival, some RCL. I went on the anthem of the seas out of Bayonne nj.

 

Things that are the same or very close.

 

MDR food. 

Buffet food.

Pay restaurants.

Service by wait staff and stewards.

 

Better on RCL

 

the ship itself. Wow. AOS was beautiful.

big production shows

 

better on carnival

 

free restaurants...by far

daily activities

staff is much more fun 

casino due to the fun factor

CDs

Fresh off the Navigator (been years since I sailed on RCL) and spent a lot of time comparing it to Princess. Overall, it's a good backup option. Unfortunately, fun is no longer a selling point for me so I wouldn't #ChooseFun. Princess is quiet and sophisticated -- I like that.

Ive never been on princess  and probably never will. My in laws sail them all the time and listening to them, it sounds boring and for old laid back people....like them.

Honestly, it is. I'm usually the youngest guest onboard unless I do one of their shorter cruises or Caribbean/Alaska and I just really like their hard product. For me, currently it's very consistent and always meets my expectations.

 

Nowhere near Holland America level though.

Just my 2 cents on Sunrise having gotten off of her last week. Very crowded feeling. I wanted to stop at the buffet for a quick breakfast. After waiting in line 15 minutes, I gave up and got an omelet from the sandwich window which was still another 10 minute wait but when I walked past the buffet line with my food, the woman who was in front of me was still a few people away from getting a plate. That's crowded! Was the same every morning and lunch. Pizza line was usually 10-20 minute wait too.

 

I wouldn't mind waiting for good food but it was barely edible and in some cases disgusting. Cheeses looked warm and oily, bacon was usually just bits they'd shovel onto your plate. Tongs and utensils at the buffet were dirty and cross-contaminated which is beyond anniying. And they had someone unwrapping frozen waffles to put into a toaster instead of just making fresh waffles. Pizza was good, especially after waiting so long for it. Steakhouse and Chef's Table were very good. Italian for dinner was just really bad. Pasta there and dining room had a texture like it was old. Main Dining Room was awful except the last night which was decent. One waiter at lunch stood there staring at us as we're trying to have a conversation and started to complain that he hasn't had a day off in 13 days. He looked like he was ready to pass out or stab me if I ordered anything else. 

 

For an 8 day cruise I'd normalize gain 8 pounds. I only gained 3 because I usually skipped meals instead of waiting and didn't eat everything on my plate because it was so bad. The 3 pounds was probably from drinks. The Alchemy Bar and its bartenders were great. 

 

Had 2 massages and they were awesome!

I do try. I didn't get "tricked" either because I read about the entire span of the refurb on Cruise Critic. Do you know how small the number of people who book Carnival and all cruises never read Cruise critic? I read once on Cruise Critic that it was well over 95%. That's how you step into the unexpected if the company's site or agents say it's new.

Um I had little trouble figuring out the refurbs on the carnival site. I believe very little here because there’s too many fabrications.

I cannot consider these ships "new" because they basically have the same bones and deck designs that are 20 years old.  Sure, with a 2 month dry dock you can basically gut the decor and replace all the furniture... and change the top deck features.  But the plumbing and electric plant are mostly the same.  Engines and generators - I think the same but refurbished as any ship dry dock (open to being told this was more - can't find any info on this.)

 

The added cabin capacity worries me as I was on Destiny and it was crowded at times.  So the changes for the entertainment and food venues is critical but that buffet crowd... that's what I would expect to be trouble.

 

I think it is misleading for Carnival to market them as "all new."  I would be happier with "Reinvented" or something like that.
