There are pant suits and there are pant suits.  I had some really elegant ones -- that I no longer fit.

 

But it seems to me that Secretary of State Clinton lived in them.  I wouldn't have called them "polyester".

 

Personally, I don't see much difference between a nice pants suit and a coordinated slacks/shirt/jacket outfit.
