Tansy Mews Posted September 21, 2019 #1 Share Posted September 21, 2019 In summer here in Canada, we get them in the summer and they are not welcome to the party! I wonder whether we need to bring repellent with us. Just occurred to me tonight! Frances

We love to have the cabin door open all night. If you feel you need it on land you can buy repellent here.

I meant on excursions. We are going on a few wildlife tours. I don't expect them in the cities, though! What about in the Blue Mountains? Or in Tasmania? The trick is to drink a lot of alcohol.LOL Sun screen it a lot more important. Especially in NZ South Island. The ultra violent rays are extremely strong. Australia isn’t much better. We are bought up to respect the sun (we have the highest skin cancer rate )and can’t believe how people lay in the sun. A hat with a broad rim is good and you’re sun glasses. But you can buy it here. Cruise___master Posted September 21, 2019 #6 Share Posted September 21, 2019 Nz has a lot more mosi's than Oz, especially the south island. But yes sun cream is just as important! buy a spray as its easier to spray on over the top of suncream.

possum52 Posted September 22, 2019 #8 Share Posted September 22, 2019 Where it is humid, there are likely to be mosquitoes and also if there areas of still water close by. We live fairly close to wetlands and have mosquitoes most of the summer, particularly late in the day. I would have a repellent particularly if you are prone to insect bites. Enjoy your cruise Down Under. Leigh
Suzi66 Posted September 23, 2019 #9 Share Posted September 23, 2019 If I were you I would put on repellent when you go through the Sounds. While I didn't get bitten, and insects normally love me, the few times we have gone through, my husband ended up with bites all over his legs. I put it down to the fact that mine were covered and he wears shorts all year round so they had better opportunity to get him. Ever since the first time he was bitten though I have put repellent on me to be doubly sure. Last couple of times he has done it as well.
Tansy Mews Posted September 25, 2019 Author #10 Share Posted September 25, 2019 Thanks. Based on clues in your posts, I see that sandflies are the big problem! I will bring sunscreen and repellent! Thanks. Frances

Rid was developed in the tropics where the little devils play havoc.
Rare Keith1010 Posted September 25, 2019 #12 Share Posted September 25, 2019 Insects love me. I have not had problems on board the ship sailing these areas. However, on certain excursions where we go into forests and other similar areas I have used repellent and glad I did. Keith
