Burnie Tasmania

We are cruising to Tasmania and Melbourne in March on Queen Elizabeth and wondering what to do in Burnie?  Ar hire seems to be from Wynyard airport..... would love to drive ourselves around for the day. Anyone done this?

Yep we did it last year, taxi to the airport, we shared with another couple on our roll call, drove the food trail, visiting a strawberry farm, chocolate place, cheese factories, lunch by Bass Strait, a couple of antique stores, cherry farm. The taxi to the airport was about $20 from memory.

I haven’t been to Burnie by cruise ship but isn’t cradle mountain a big destination?

Yes, but it is around 1 1/2 - 2 hours each way just to get to Dove lake.

The couple we shared a cab to the airport with did Cradle Mountain, they thought it was a bit pushed for time.

Yeah, time to have a quick look but not much time for a walk.

I would recommend a short (40mins from Wynyard) drive to Stanley. 

 

Great historical sites and the chair lift up 'The Nut' which is a unique lava formation with stunning views.

 

Most travellers dont bother with the north west of Tassie, but we loved it.

I have to say, last time we were there we spend days deciding if we would go East or West.

I have been north numerous times, generally on the ship later that day.

For Burnie, thoroughly recommend the 3 hour 'Scenic Burnie & Surrounds' tour we booked thru Burnie Visitor Information Centre at Maker's Workshop. Small group tour that included a visit to Platypus habitat, whiskey distillery, short town tour & lovely drive along the coastline.
