Formal night? Do many dress up?

My wife and I actually enjoy dressing for evening dinner, as it’s our vacation week and time to enjoy ourselves. Mind you we have cruised 25+ times and now dine in specialty dining each nite and typically just the two of us.  Formal evenings we do do tux and cocktail dress. When you own the tux, may as well get use from it. As for all the other dining evening, typically we are smartly causal particularly in the Caribbean trips. Just a word to me mindful of, is summer weather warm weather.
 

As to your question,  we would suggest dress how you wish and want to enjoy your vacation. On Oasis class, you will see nearly everything to anything.  Vacation with your family is about your memories, so enjoy and make the memories of the trip the way you and your family want them to be.

I stopped wearing suits after the Allure.  I noticed immediately after every dinner, I would return to my room to change to jeans or shorts before going to the shows, casino or bars.  For me, suits are uncomfortable despite the materials they’re made of.  I feel like the multiple layers of clothing restricts my upper body movements especially when reaching for the butter or salt.  And the shoes...I have the hardest time finding dress shoes that are as comfortable as my Nike’s.  
 

So every night, I’ve chosen to wear chinos and a short sleeve polo shirt.  During formal nights, I go to a specialty restaurant.  IMO, the MDR during formal nights should be for those who dress up.  That’s their time to shine and look great with any picture they take.  In the meantime, I’ll be in another restaurant enjoying my formal night as those in the MDR enjoy theirs.

You won't stick out, but the days of a "formal night" are dead. Rest in Peace. On formal night, you are likely to see people in shorts sitting next to people in suits. 

 

It is easier to pick out gentleman's dress. On a recent cruise on the Allure, we surveyed our section of the main dining room. On formal night there were no tuxes in sight. You could probably count the number of suits and ties on one hand. Lots of dress shirts and polo shirts and pants. A few shorts. 

 

We have cruised for many decades and are happy to leave gowns and long dresses and shoes at home (along with tuxes and bow ties). Casual vacation ware is what we pack and the lack of formal dress has reduced a full suitcase from our packing.

I still can't decide if we will go formal on our next cruise.  The main reason I guess I want to is because I have lovely dresses to wear, one I've never even worn!  But if it's going by the wayside perhaps I'll make my life easier.  I don't know. I just can't make up my mind. We're not flying so packing is not the issue.  Seems every report can be a little different in what the most common dress is on formal night.  I guess I'm just looking to be appropriate, so to speak.

Yes, especially Tropical and White nights. I bring clothes for both!

 

We enjoy cruising and dressing either casual (not shorts and tees) or more formal (cocktail dresses, skirt and blouse, nice pants and blouse, and pants with jacket or a suit) when we cruise. I look forward to my next cruise, which is eleven nights and has 2-3 formal nights.

 

Nothing can beat the swimsuit with sheer coverup I saw in the dining room on formal night during our cruise on Symphony in May. Say what you will, but that is far too casual for dining any night. 😔

One thing that has been referred to but not expounded upon are the factors that determine the percentage of dressy dressers on a cruise. Someone noted that different ports seem to have different rates of dressing up or down, but to me, the biggest factor is the length of the cruise. 

 

If you're on a 3, 4 or 5 day cruise, you're not going to see many (if any) tuxes or suits. But on a 7 day, the percentage of dressed up diners goes up significantly.

Just got off the Rhapsody in Jan. Older ship with older clientele. We saw everything on formal night. From tuxes to a guy wearing a baseball cap throughout dinner. My husband brought a suit and I a dress for one of the formal nights. We wanted to get a nice picture taken as it had been a while. The picture on the steps in the Centrum was beautiful, and was worth the effort of bringing those few dress up items.

I made no judgement on his appearance, just that wearing that shirt was funny last century and that now it's not.

I was on Symphony Jan25-Feb1 and was pleasantly surprised how many folks seemed to dress up nearly every night. I did 4 out of 7, and my remaining 3 were at least date night appropriate if not formal. 

 

Our cabin was on the 8th floor and we loved walking through Central Park to and from dinners and shows. We did dine at specialty restaurants 4 nights, and with friends the remaining nights, so I did re-wear the dresses two of the nights I went formal. I loved that lots of folks seemed to be dressed up, and I didn't feel out of place at all, dressed up, or dressed down.

So go ahead and try and justify your comments as being funny.

I so agree with you. It is a blessing to be able to enjoy a vacation! While I still follow the dress code, I do not judge others. And I agree, being able to enjoy a nice vacation is a luxury.
